  • i know this is p*ssin the Canadians off....

hey there folks....can cbc be serious.....no more "hockey night in canada" theme music.....are they nutz....have they lost their minds....this is a travesty i tell you all....as a true hockey fan, i have grown up to that theme all my life.....especially now when either versus (or the old oln) use to be the sole broadcasting station.....this keeps up and the puck will be safety yellow , there will be no hitting, and don cherry wear a suit that actually looks good on him...not something made in the back room of the fabric shop.....just kidding...we luv his suits.....some just need more water than others.....now, back to our regular programing....ross

    Hey Ross,
As a new canadian and an almost religious hockey fan (I've coached and I still play plus I'm a level 3 referee) I have one question:
I read you're post a couple of times and I'm really not sure what your point is?? Sorry but could you explain again - preferably before starting in on the 12 pack, thanks.

C'mon, Sip, you must have been following CBC these last couple of days.

Apparently, CBC is in a bit of a pi$$ing match/negotiation with the lawyers for the guy who composed and who has copyright on the hockey night in Canada 'theme' music. CBC says they ar in negotiations. The composer's guys say they have failed to come to an agreement. If things don't work out, CBC won't be able to keep using the theme music, effectively almost immediately. Somebody is talking about running a contest to find a new 'theme song' for HNIC. It may not be the end of the free world as we know it, but this is pretty serious $tuff for a Canuck...

It is not a guy but a woman that wrote the music.

I don't watch Hockey, sorry! But this sounds similar to what happened years ago with the person who wrote
"Happy Birthday To You", they got greedy and demanded $$ for it's use on TV and Movie shows and such, as well as even in restaurants....that's why places like Outback and Ruby Tuesday's came up with different songs to sing to patrons having a birthday, otherwise they would be required to pay a royalty fee for using the Original one.

And I think I read/heard that they put something like a 100 or 150 year time frame on copywrited music now. The folks back in the 50's and earlier didn't have that protection and many lost out on lots of $$!

Everything seems to fall back to bucks doesn't it? Didn't we miss one season due to an issue with player's salaries?

Wonder if Stompin Tom ever gets any green when they play his "Hockey Song"?

Ah, but did you catch the subtle bit of what actually happened? CBC couldn't come to terms, so CTV stepped in and paid the price. Now, CTV's going to use the theme song on their broadcasts and on TSN. CBC still needs to go find something new for Hockey Night In Canada.

Let's hope they don't go to Air Canada looking for suggestions on someone to sing them a new song...

if so, this is a very sad story for all of hockey history.....cbc was the only channel we could get some of the games on.....now i know the exact feeling when the octipi hits the ice from the second level.....ross

                            and.....

I believe I heard that CBC is running a contest for a new song, payout will be 100,000. How much did the old one go for? Haven't heard mention of that. Also, I guess the professionals must want way more then 100Gs to come up with something, if CBC is willing to pay that on a contest.

                              something is wrong here.....

a contest to find a new song......$100,000 for a new song......every hockey fan abroad should be up in arms right now......just how much does cbc make on hockey night in canada....i bet it is more than $100,000......way more.....i, as a true hockey fan, am outraged at the attitude that the cbc is demonstrating......hockey is a tradition that has been passed down thru the times.....so is this simple "theme" song....just my hockey "brain" talking.....ross
