  • Automotive AC question.

    Ok, so call me a wimp. AC compressor died in my '95 Olds 88. Installed a "compressor delete pully". Thats all well and good till it started getting hot. Now I want it to work. I got a hot smokin deal on a compressor/clutch, oriface tube, accumalator/drier, condenser and install o-ring kit. The all the parts arrived today. The compressor says it is full of the right oil. What my plan is to install all of these parts and take down to my AC guy and have him suck the system down (leave it alone Prom!!!) and recharge it. Do I risk cratering the new compressor doing this?

    BTW, all these parts are new, no JY stuff.

        WC, Autozone has vacuum pumps in their free rental program. I'd put the Freon in myself, were it mine. I've done it couple times. You may need to have your friend get it to work. On old GMs you have to jump it electrically to get the new compressor to kick in. I'd explain that better, but it's been a while since I had to do it.

          As long as you DO NOT turn on the AC until it's been recharged, you should have no problem. The clutch on the AC will keep it from turning. You can leave the wire off the clutch, just to be safe.

            I did this job once, on a 92 lumina. didn't bother vacuuming the system, figgered the compressor would take care of that for me. Charged the system, worked fine except that the schrader valve leaked and let all the refrigerant escape. I am reasonably certain vacuuming the system was not the cause as it's not the first time that valve had stuck. would have replaced the valve, but the kid whose car it was set the darn thing on fire a few weeks ago and subsequently junked it....one less thing for me to deal with. that's all I got, have a nice day and ride safe.

              The A/C unit will not start without a charge in the system. It is controlled by a pressure switch. Evacing the system is an absolute! If it is not done it causes more problems than I can list here. The main one of those problems that you will see right away is that with ANY amount of non-condensables (air) in the system you won't get as much "cold" out of the vents as you were looking for!!

              If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!
