    Hi TC,

Hard to tell from here, but (in the final pic of the panels) in a couple of places it looks like you step down through a couple of layers of primer/paint in one...... particularly across the centre of the panel on the left as we look at it.

The effect you are aiming for is "feathered".... like round the edges of the panel on the right. The different layers gradually fade out, with no distinct edge.

Even if it looks OK when painted, those hard edges tend to show through eventually. If I was that far on, I would just sand the rest off; it is always the edges of paint layers which cause problems..... no edges, no reaction sites!

Theory says that "ordinary" primers are OK on plastic, and for the experts they may be. I have always done better using a specific "plastic" primer for a first coat. I usually use it in an aerosol..... One good coat to seal is all that is needed; rest can go on from a spraygun.

    Looks great otherwise!

      Another Update...we have color!!

      Hey there Folks,

I realize it's been a little while, but there was a delay in getting some special "supplies" I needed to create a mask/pattern before I could paint the COLORED basecoat over the black!! And then it was raining for the past few days, not good to paint in 90+% humidity!!

I have to confess that I didn't invent this idea, I "borrowed" it from the O.C.C. show...but with a bit of a twist...since I found some newer style of the screen material!!!!

If you watch the show, you can think back to when they did the FAN's episodes, there was a woman that liked SNAKES, and so Nubbs used some fishnet stockings to create a snakeskin type pattern in the paint for it!

Well, Godzilla is just a big ol' lizard...reptile...in the snake family, and I thought that would be a neat thing, but then during my searches for Fishnet stockings, I found a larger pattern called FENCENET....and then I found a newer pattern, it was a 5 string FENCENET, and I thought that would look even better!

Okay, here are the black coated fenders with the LARGE 5 string Fencenet stockings in place before painting!

The pattern was so large that I thought it wouldn't do well on the sidecovers, and I'll be putting on additional graphics over it, so I used a smaller pattern on it!

And now here are the parts after the Metallic green has been sprayed, and dried, and the stocking removed! There are some places where the stocking didn't lay flat, mostly on the front of the rear fender, but it'll be under the seat and won't show anyways! The toe sections of the stockings had a finer pattern that I thought blended well, so I included it also!

Well, I still have the gastank to do, will probably have to cut the stocking legs down the length to be able to open it up and drape it over the large tank, but I think I can do it! I still have to put the clear coat on it, but I think it looks decent! I'm no pro, so I'm not looking for perfection! More to come!!

That, and maybe look for queen size. Come to think of it, I think the only time I ever saw stockings like that in real life they were in fact queen size...

                  THAT looks SWEET!

I remember when we were painting the gas tank on my 1st XS. It looked SOOOOO cool for the first 2 minutes... then everything bubbled. I think I spent bout 2 weeks getting it down to bare metal. I used carving knives, meat hatchets,... and Im not even kidding. There was so much filler in there it was the fastest way.
I wish I took some pics of the naked tank, its potato shape and the way it looks now.
It took bout 3/4 of a kilo of filler to make it look like an XS tank again. It was crashed on the right side - quite badly.

So yeah... bubbles bad. That paint thingie NICE.
Will you put another layer of some sort of transparent paint over it to keep the pattern "in the background"?

Wow, TC. Seems every year or so you come up with something that blows our minds. The saying goes that there is a fine line between genius and insanity. I used to think that you were just a bit insane like the rest of us, but you've crossed the line into genius with this one! I can't wait to see Godzilla in person.

Wow, a surprise round of responses!

                                Hey Folks,

Thanks for the encouragement and comments. Strom, yes, these are basic non-hardening basecoats, and so I'll be putting a few layers of clear coat with hardener over the top to protect, seal, preserve, etc.!

I came home yesterday after work anxious to put the green color layer on the tank...I spent over an hour cutting the 2 leg sections in half....and they WERE QUEENSIZE....and then sewing the 2 halves together so that I could get it to stretch/fit around the tank! SO...that evening was shot, and then lastnight, a storm/rain blew in right after I had shot the 2-3 layers of color on the tank and remaining sidecover, so I couldn't get into the CLEAR COATS.

Came home tonight hoping to do the clears, but more storms, humidity, windy weather came back, so I spent my time removing the stockings from the now dried/cured painted tank! Here are a couple of shots. And for you EAGLE EYES, yes, there's a little dimple just below the left nameplate area....like I said, I'm no pro, and was/is under a time constraint, and was worried about flash rusting after I had taken the tank down to bare metal, so I didn't fill "THEM"...another one near the front....with bondo! And my sewing job wasn't perfect either as evident in the pattern right down the MIDDLE of the tank, but I'll be the one seeing that, most people will be seeing the sides....or mostly the rear fender! :P

I have removed the petcocks from the XS tank, will be getting some new Orings and washers for the screws to mount them to the XJ tank, along with cleaning up the gas cap! I have another finishing touch to show....many of you are new and won't know it, but a few veterans will know!
Here's hoping for good "CLEAR"coat weather tomorrow!
