Hey Crazy only reason i used it was alot of times on new plastic covers so it wouldnt lift. i use to have all water bourne primers IN MS when the EPA changed alot of the rules for painting.alot of times il use Epoxy or Urethane primer"s.Alot of the airbrush paints i use are water bourne just nice to work with and you stay away from all the Isocyanate"s. but when i paint i have a full fresh air respirator system i just cant spell worth a damn LOL.

Actually, it's quite a good program.

The ex bought it for the boys when I was overseas.
Shame she never sat down with them and used it.
Phonics is how we all learned to pronounce/spell words.
It's a hell of a lot better system that what's being taught now.
I forget the name, something like "See and Say".
You either know the word's pronounciation or you don't. Or you try to figger it out by comparing it to similar words.
Just doesn't work as well as phonics... knowing the EA or the OI sounds and saying the words that way.
Same as the new math. There are no hard and fast rules to follow. Believe it or not, in the textbooks, children are told to "guesstimate" their best answer.
I fear the next generation of children...
There will be no T.C's, Divers Ray nor Freds in toon.
Just a bunch of TRBIGs and MROs.
Might as well just close down this site now.

        Who was that Masked man?

        Okay,

So now I understand about the need to apply the clearcoats over the base coats either at least 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours per the PPPG directions.....this is without having to resand with 600grit dry! Once I let the basecoats cure for more than 24 hours, then I now realize that I will need to sand to roughen up the surface to allow the next layers something to grab/bite onto to stick!!

Now, as for the Respirator, I went to my local hardware store, and then to LOWES, and found one rated as VO95 and bought it.

But funny you should mention the Isocyanates.....I couldn't find any masks that didn't say not for use with the above chemical! They said for pesticides, and solvents, paints, etc., but specifically mentioned the Isocyanate chemical! And I couldn't remember ALL of the ingredients listed on the containers, but after I got home, I saw the ISOCYANATES as part of the mixture!!

It's a dual canister respirator, here it is: AO Safety brand.
        Paint and Pesticide Respirator
        #95115
4-point headstrap system which secures the respirator comfortably to the face

Soft, comfortable facepiece with adjustable suspension
NIOSH Approved organic vapor cartridges, R95 filters, filter clips
Recommended for protection against organic vapors and sprays associated with paint and pesticide spraying, solvents, glues, thinners, non-lead based paints and non-asbestos insulation materials.
It has the R95 filters which according to the included info says it's RESISTANT to oil based fumes, at a 95% efficiency. They offer....although not at LOWES, a P100 filter, listed as Oil Proof, at 99.7% efficiency!?

So....for the short duration of my exposures, in an open garage....car door as well as side door, inside a paint booth with only sides secured, top open to air....will I be safe enough with this Respirator using the R95 filter??

I got my paintbooth all fixed up, and am now working to play with the spray gun. I went ahead and lightly sanded the Primer with 600 dry, and will attempt to put on the Black Basecoat.

          Forget the respirator!

Just do what I did, went up the road a little way and found a young fellow who knows what he is doing and had him redo the fire dragon for me.

For the few dollars this young man wanted I got a nice job of painting done and none of the worries of the screwup that might have been evident had I tried it myself. Not to say that you cannot do it TC. If it was wiring or welding or machining I would have done it myself but I never even passed crayola class in school.

            Hey Dragon,

Nice graphic on your fairing. I do have decent artistic skill...in otherwords, I can copy just about anything! SO...I'm looking forward to developing my airbrush skills and such.

HOWEVER, I recently shot the first base coat of black on the sidecovers and fenders. I need some pointers!

I have a conventional spray gun, 1.3mm external mix nozzle, pressure feed vs. siphon feed...its a Campbell Hausfeld DH4200.

When I was first spraying on the 1:1 mixed basecoat, I could see the orange peel pattern emerging, so as I continued to spray in subsequent passes I was able to apply more so that the surface smoothed out....but regrettably on the sides there was apparently a little too much or too thick a layer, and I got a couple of runs!! I'm letting it dry overnight, and then I'll attempt to sand down the irregular area before shooting another layer.

My question is I think the Orange peel pattern will smooth itself out with LESS paint than what I finally ended up applying which caused theruns, any tips on telling when I've applied enough that will smooth out???

My sidecovers had a few spots that bubbled/wrinkled up, but I'm pretty sure it was due to apparently NOT getting all of the OLD paint off first. The solvents in the raw paint are pretty strong I guess!?!? Oh well, I'll have more sanding and repainting to do, but I need the practice!

              TC,
Regular painting I can do. Sounds to me as though you are trying to put too much paint on too fast. I am not an expert in that particular field and I will assume that Paintman will chime in here shortly but I like to use the siphon feed and set it so that it tends to look as though I am not getting enough paint and sort of mist it on until it covers. Kinda like a whole bunch of light coats until you see it sort of blend together smoothly. Hard to describe correctly but I don't try to get it to cover in one pass, I keep going over it until it all of a sudden just looks good.

                Hey Dragon,

Yeah, I'm making many passes to build up the paint layer watching to see when it smooths out, but I must have just kept putting on too much.

Yeah, I wanted SIPHON feed(the gun is supposed to be convertible), but the instructions for the gun says: first remove the hex head screw/plug from the underside of the gun handle that the paint bucket screws onto. THEN it says to put the same plug into the LOWER of 2 openings in the front of the spray nozzle/gun after removing the actual nozzle/lock ring!

HOWEVER the allen head plug is the wrong size to fit into the front of the gun. SO I tried it just removed from the base, but it kept putting pressure into the bucket and occasionally spritzed the paint out up thru the unplugged hole!?

SO...I put the plug back in. IT still uses the external mix nozzle, and I was able to turn the volume/supply control knob back quite a bit to have a fairly fine spray coming out, so I don't think the gun is actually doing anything wrong, it's most likely my technique! But hopefully Paintman or others much more experienced with spray guns can give me some other fine pointers!

                    Limited experience... but...

when I shot my base coat on my FJ... I shot a couple of light coats... then lightly sanded... another coat or two... dry... light sand... then another coat or two... light sand... clear coat... dry... light sand again... clear coat...(see where this is going?)

Good paint takes time and patience... I rushed the silver and it ran... but the basecoat and gold came out very well... light coats and good dry time in between worked well for me...

It's frustrating the first time out and sometimes the second (or maybe even the third )... but you'll be happy with it in the end, I'm certain...

                    Good luck!

(I think that if you build it up too quickly, you will have a problem with sagging as well... ask any granny and they'll tell you it isn't a good thing...

                      Yup TC,
That sounds about right, I went out to the shop to check but then remembered that my oldest son had borrowed the paint gun for an afternoon about three or four months ago. But that is the right scenario. Pressure feed means that there is air pressure being applied to the feed can forcing the paint up to the nozzle. Siphon feed means that it is being sucked up there by the air flow which means that that screw has to come out of the top of the can to vent the assembly and put in to keep air from coming into the can from the pressured part of the unit. Don't know why yours does not fit, seems to me that mine did not have that problem. Also seems to trip my remembry that it may have come set up for the sipon feed to begin with. Any way you try it, just keep it up until it works, keep up with the pictures please.

                        Hey again,

Well, this gun comes preset at PRESSURE. However, I just went back out and looked at it again. The internal nozzle/valve assembly has a hex head that allows it to be screwed/tightened in place. The factory apparently tightened it a bit too far and the edge of the hex head was just barely blocking full access to the plug/threaded hole. I loosened it, and was able to put the underlying plug into the lower nozzle/head hole! So now it should work as Siphon feed, and may allow me to spray a lighter layer!? I'll post some photos tomorrow....IF I get things to work out okay!

                            Gun setup

Hey TC sounds like you're learning. Its always a little frustrating the first time. Is your gun an HVLP (high volume low pressure) or conventional? With an HVLP gun the air pressure you will shoot at most of the time with be 20psi and about 10 at the air cap. What you are looking for is a very fine mist when you spray, and the distance you spray at is also very critical. You want to be between 8-10 inches and always hold gun square to the surface you are spraying. With base coat colors, you can usually get good coverage in 2 coats. 3 are necessary with colors with high Metalics to help balance them out. Now did you just prime the covers or did you use a sealer first? If just using a regular primer surfacer, it will take more more light passes to hide the primer. With a sealer it will help with paint flow out and color.
Bbest way to see if your gun is set up right is to get a good sized piece of masking paper or cardboard and put on a wall. Then take your gun and make a few passes on it. You want to see a nice fan pattern. You can adjust the width depending on the gun up to 14 inches. If it looks heavy on the edges or center, you can adjust your flow rate and the air mixture and it will widen up for you. Good thing about base coat colors is they dry fast and you can wet sand out mistakes. It just takes time to learn good technique. First thing i ever painted looked like a navel orange. If you realy get stumped PM me and I'll send you my number.

                            Good luck.

                              Update...NOT for the squeemish!

                              Hey Paintman,

Guess you missed it in my previous post, but it's a conventional gun, but I was able to get it into SIPHON mode, not as much paint spraying out this time!!

Okay, here are the scary photos of my MISTAKES!!
First, my makeshift paint boot made of 4 drop cloths hung on vinyl ropes!

Here are my PRIMERED parts inside the booth:

Here are my front and rear fenders showing the severe drippage affect!

And then here are the same parts AFTER I gave them a good wet sanding, and recoated with the finer adjusted spray gun. I purposely practiced on the smaller parts before attempting the tank, but I finally got up enough nerve to shoot it, and it's come out okay so far!!

And now for the real HORROR!!!! The sidecovers BUBBLE EFFECT!

I direct your attention back up to my previous post showing my modest sanding efforts along with the Bondo plugs....however the chemicals/solvents in the basecoat doesn't play well with the residual Rustoleum remnants!!!! a

This is my 3rd Wet Sanding effort...I'm getting pretty good at it!

So...hopefully I've now removed all of the offending underlying old paint that was causing the bubbles!? The areas not sanded were NOT bubbling!

I know a few folks out there (Da-Bubble and AudiJunky) would say "They now look great....GLOSS BLACK, shoot the clear and be done with it!"

But I have more surprises in store, stay tuned!!
