  • The Painting Project ENDS!!

    Hey there folks,

Well, I finally got to the local auto paint store to get the supplies I need to do my custom paint job on Godzilla, and 81SH. I've been doing some research, acquiring some "toys" like an HLVP sprayer, have the compresor and extra 10 Gal tank, proper filters, also picked up a nice little AIRBRUSH, a couple of books on how to airbrush MC's and such!

I've got an XJ tank that I received a few years ago from a fellow I helped fix his XJ's 1st/2nd gears, and he gave it to me! It's primed, but I don't know with what, etc.? I'm a very extreme novice when it comes to painting. I did a rattle can job on Godzilla in 2001 but the tank has gotten another dent or two, and fuel dribble stains/runs, etc.! Have a PNM petcock from Mason79 that I'll be fitting, and capping off the other hole!

Also my fenders were rusty/pitted, and I had sanded them lightly before I painted them, but bubbled the front fender with a high speed pass stretching the tire and getting a RUB due to the fender being the wrong kind and fitting too closely to the front edge...bike had been in a bad front ender years ago, dealer must have put on a 650 fender or a standard as has been pointed out to me vs. the OEM special! The rear fender's paint has flaked a bit also, again, due to poor prep of old chrome and rattle can quality paint!

I had found a color match over a year ago while driving around, came across a 2002 Mustang with this nice Metallic Green color, and was going to use that. BUT a week ago, I saw this SCION XB with a brighter metallic green, and found it instead, and had it mixed up and bought it, along with all the fixins, reducer, Urethane Clear coat, catalyst, etching primer, base primer, and then a BLACK base coat, along with the SCION GREEN base coat. I have a plan for neat texture I want to do, but I'm going to keep it a secret for now.....depending on whether it turns out or not! Total paint supplies were less than $200.00! PPG brand Shopline stuff!

I also have plans for some custom airbrush graphics, we'll see how good of an artist I become? I hope to get it all done in time for XS East Memorial Day weekend!

I'll take plenty of photos to document my success? or Failure to share my pride or misery with you all! Stay Tuned!

      "Green with envy."

Haven't painted anything since 1980 or so. Cars... back when enamel was OK.
Just don't have the confidence anymore... and then there's the fish eye, orange peel, etc.
I can rattle can with the best of them, but don't remember how to mix stuff, etc.
As usual... we expect detailed reports.

        You daring soul, you!

Have fun doing that. I love to paint. I did a great flame job on my 68 VW pickup-flames out the back and sides, not the front. Came out great.
When you start with the airbrush, grab a piece of cardboard, put it vertical-ish and do your design there as a trial run. You will get the 'feel' of the stroke that way without having to start over on the bike, and you'll see how your design will look. Sometimes you think something will come out great, and you just can't get the angle right when you try it with the airbrush. Better to discover that there than ruin all the prep-work you just did. 75% of a good paint job is the prep, and it sucks to start over. Once you start, relax your shoulders and let it fly. You'll be surprised what you will create! Since you bought an airbrush, I assume that it is new to you.
Good luck with it and lots of pix!

You just need very fine amounts of orange peel but maybe a skosh more fish eye... smoother texture...

Best of luck TC! Absolutely post pics

Naw, I want to keep "some BLING" on it!! I painted the fenders out of necessity before, and I like the extra COLOR it gives the bike, but my bags/trunk are just going to get the buffing wheel!

Thanks Paintman, I hope I don't have to bother you or the other Paint experts here. I've read alot about PREP being the main component of a good job. The base coat dries very quickly, and the clear coat can be put into service after just 24 hours of curing, but I'll allow more time just to be sure! Yes, photos will be done for sure! Keep your fingers crossed!

I got a pro to do mine. Didn't have any faith in myself to try something like that on my own. All I did was the valve cover.

I just got the tanks and battery covers back. He even painted one of my triple tree covers to match the tank since it was so rusted. I'm waiting on the new emblems to arrive in the mail.

Gotta get these bikes to gether ASAP since it's warmed up nicely here in NH.

                    The Prep work begins!

                    Hey Folks,

Okay, pulled off the fenders...reamed out the rear mounting hole for the front one a little more so it will sit farther up away from the tire....sorry Marty, I'm keeping it! Pulled the side covers off. Pulled the license plate holder/light assembly off and separated the light from the bracket.
Here are what they looked like before....YUCK!

Sorry they are a little dark. The old tank had fuel leak from the gas cap and smear the side, the seat rubbed the end of the tank, etc.!

Here are a couple shots of the NEW XJ tank I'll be putting on!

I have a question for Paintman or others. I got this XJ tank several years ago...I've cleaned and lined the insides. BUT I don't know what kind of primer was put on it. Seems like it marks easily, but doesn't show the base metal. Should I sand it down to bare metal and re-etchPrime and Prime, or just do a light sanding and put another Prime coat on top, or just light sand and then put my basecoats on top of the ??quality old Prime??

And after several hours of grinding away with my fancy 3M hard fiber disc, and my 6" wire wheel on the bench grinder, here are the fenders ready for etch priming and base priming!!!

I'm grinding/sanding the side covers, I had used some crappy Rustoleum paint many a year ago, and before when I tried to sand it off with a sanding disc on my drill, it just kinda tried to melt and such...the paint, not the sidecover! This time with my 3M grinding disc I'm able to get that off and get down to the base plastic! Will still be doing some hand/block sanding to get it a bit smoother, and filling in the emblem mounting holes, I won't be putting the old emblems back on...that's where one of the custom graphics will be done!!
                    To be continued!

                      Primer

Hey TC since your not sure i would strip old tank wash realy well then use a good self etchig primer on it that way you know what you have and since you are doing base coat /CC paint i would seal they tank to it will give you alot better color hold out and prevent any bleed through since you are using PPG products i would go with a Chroma seeal . sealer it shoots real easy and it will make over all job job look alot nicer.

                        Hey T.C.,
Did I hear you say "BLING"?
Living near Detroit I've seen some "bling".
If you need any help there, let me know.
For instance last years "bling" was a motorcycle completely covered in 1/2 inch square mirrors. Fenders, frame, tank, wheels, helmet, pin stripes down his suit and I think his gloves.
I took a picture while driving next to him, but with the reflection it didn't turn out that good. You could hardly look at him.
Good luck, I've got no painting pointers.
Can't wait to see the progress and end results.

When preping bare metal, what is the best way to go about it? When I was 16 I was taught a lot by a guy who was really good and had been painting cars for decades. We would always wipe the metal down with acid before shooting primer. Is that the way to go or is self etching primer better?

                            Hey Jessie,

Self Etching primer HAS the acid already in it, you lay on about 3 thin coats about 5 minutes apart, and then let it cure. Then you put regular primer on TOP of that! That's how it was explained to me at the paint shop, and on the Etch/Primer label!

I've also seen rust converting paint that has the phosphoric acid in it, and it converts lite residual rust to black primer after it cures!

                              Hi TC,
I will be painting my newly acquired Standard tank Astro Towtruck Orange to match the sidecovers & sidecar in the next week or so. Just as soon as the lacquer thinner/acetone cocktail has removed the sad & sorry Kreem over rust disaster of a sealing attempt hanging in loose curtains inside it. One thing I do not see in your list of paintshop goodies is a replaceable cartridge style breathing mask. Do NOT breathe those fumes. The terrible warnings on the paint and solvent cans are true in every respect.
