  • Ultrasonic cleaner

Has anyone tried an ultrasonic cleaner to clean their small parts? Jay Leno has a huge one that I found out costs about $20,000, but there are smaller ones on ebay for anywhere between $100 and $1000. I thought that if they work one might be nice to have to clean small parts, gun parts, etc. Beats scrubbing them in a parts washer! Eastwood also has a tumbler similar to the old rock tumbler I had when I was a kid that is supposed to work well.

They work AWESOME. You still need to soak the removable parts in cleaner (jets, emulsion tube, etc.), but they will be spotless. I have also heard that it will help to free up frozen jets and such, too. The best part is that you can clean them without total disassembly.

I had to have to have the carbs went over when I was bringing my Xs11 back to life. I can if need be work on carbs but I hate doing it, plus extra time is at a premium. There is a trusted mechanic that only works on old Japanese bikes near here.. He has an ultrasonic cleaner. The carbs came out looking brand new. Not sure what the process was, but it worked.

I found an ebay "store" with a 2.5Liter cleaner for ~$90. Just ordered it along with an airbrush kit for my daughter. As I'm trying to get a set of carbs ready for Blackmage, I'll let you know how it works.

Ray, are you going to have to take them apart to fit them in that?

we have an ultrasonic cleaner at work
it is small only 1 carb at a time
i took out the diaphrams and floats
            put the carb in whole
            cleaned the inside real nice
but it doesn't take oxidation off of the outside of the carbs
but i only used soapy water
            not any kind of degreaser

Every set I have done using simple green and hot water come out SO clean you can see the casting in the metal.

My buddy cleans his four barrels in one where his wife works (a dental office)

He swears by them, especially for freeing frozen jets and the like.

I was wondering why the last cap I got at the dentist still tastes like motor oil.

That's wierd, he assured me that he makes sure to rinse out the machine with fresh gas after every use. (lol)

Okay, I take it back. Last night I did a set that was heavily oxidized on the outside and they were still pretty ugly when they came out

I'm having some problems with my bike. Thinking that the carb bodys are not getting their small ports cleaned. I've tried high pressure air with carb cleaner in the can. Have not dunked them in the solution, but really want to! I will buy a ultrasonic cleaner if you can tell me that those little ports will come clean. I have come very close to taking the chance and remove the butterflies and seals at this point also.
Just can't get this thing to straighten out!

What are your 'problems?' Carbs should be the last part of a trouble shooting equation, especially if you have already used spray and compressed air.

Engine cold, full choke, engine starts right up. After motor warms, push choke in, it will idle, but prettty rough. Backfires back through carbs., um more like a puff through carbs. All of them are doing it. Can't get a good idle out of it. Adjust idle screw up to about 1000 rpm, adjust carbs for sync, and rpm's will eventually go up to 4000 rpm all the sudden.

You have a vacuum leak. End of statement...
Check the vacuum plugs on the manifolds (carb holders), and then try a leak test with the propane torch. You DO NOT light the torch, just use it to direct the propane around the possible leak sites.
