  • oil, what to use.

What kind of oil do you all use in your motorcy cles? I have a 1980 XS1100SG. I am currently using Mobil 1 15-50.

You will find that most folks on this site like to do things as cheaply as possible. However with that said the oil for these bikes is still currently available from Yamaha.

Does the Castrol not have the stuff that screws up wet clutches? I am tired of dropping almost $4 a quart for the Valvoline 4 stroke and am looking for a cheaper alternative.

The bottom half of the API/ SAE round seal is BLANK, so it does not have any of the extra friction modifiers that are NOT recommended to use with wet clutches. It's perfectly safe!

I like Chevron Dello or Shell Rotella 15w-40. When it's super hot out here, I've have even run their 40w.

                  oil

Have went to using 20-50w Vavoline and as a result upper valve train noise is all but non-existant. Read the info in the oil thread and Pennz... is another one at bottom of list.......have also known for 20plus years when younger have seen oil galleys plugged or restricted from the parrafin base in this oil and Quaker state when rebuilding motors. Also have rebuilt motors that have had nothing but Kendall in them, and one particular 72 Vette that I brought home from Houston to rebuild for bro-inlaw had used Kendall only and it still had factory cross-hatch pattern in cyls. at 180,000 with no ridge so only did heads as SBchevys originally don't have valve guide inserts from factory. Compression was still up to factory specs. Have had other machine shop engine builders relay similar stories as to the lubricating qualities of Kendall oils. Not available here, seems to be only available in the South so I use the next best. Also Shell Rotella is right up there at the top too. Mobil 1 is at the top of list, but as a syn. oil some report clutch slippage under hard acceleration, so would not be my choice for a bike with a wet clutch.........just my 2cents.

Reading your thread title as, "What do

                    you use?"

I buy the Yamaha Oil from the local dealership. Always have...always will. In a pinch, I'll add Castrol if I'm out of the Yamaha oil.

just changed mine yesterday after 2300 miles, use autozone generic 20w50, i figure the worse oil is better than the best oil in 1978, 2.1 per qt that's around $8.40, and at that price i could even do that at 1000 miles, but i don't, it was ditry tho and the magnetic drain plug had some grit stuck to it

                          Did my homework-oil

When I purchased my bike, the PO was using Mobile 1. Since then, Mobil has added friction modifiers not settling well with my clutch. I studied this subject for a month before changing and decided in the same direction as these guys. http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Consumables.html. #1 was Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5w-40 (blue container, not white), $13 / gallon at Wal-Mart. Bike runs like new. Only gets a little bauky around 100 degrees F. Stays clearer than before and shifts like a dream. I can't make it slip. As a side note, I did two years of work on big truck electrical systems recently, and 90% of the drivers use Rotella. In their words, "My engines last forever". I had to keep looking to find a driver that did not use Rotella. The link above is Motorcycle related and pretty good reading.

Somehow I included a period in the link at the end. Here's the correct one.
