  • Imagine this....

There is one inch of snow on the roads and the Highway Patrol has closed the roads to all traffic for safety reasons....

Thought you guys in the Northern climes' might enjoy the way we deal with snow in So Cal. Happens everytime it snows a little at the 3 - 4000 foot level. My buddy Scott who bought the 79F from me and has a balancing business in Corona, lives in Phelan at about 4000 ft and in the winter the HP closes the highway up Interstate 15 in the Cajon pass. Every one who is in the same situation knows how to get down the hill on the back roads, but it really makes for a long ride with everyone else that would otherwise be on I 15 while the HP just sits on the freeway and lets no-one pass, the heavy traffic is now on the back roads that aren't ready for the heavy traffic, unpatrolled, and very dangerous.

    From one extream to another

In the town where I work, Cary IL,( anyone here from that area?) we salt every little snow storm we have. All you need is a dusting and we are out. We have had people out almost nonstop this week and what do we get.. the residents complaining because the roads aren't dry and our boss saying hes cutting our ins. benifets because we use to much salt.

Frankly I'm tired of snow now. I will gladly set my snow mobiles on fire as a tribute to the summer gods if thay stop this weather.

It comes down to $$$. It is cheaper to close it than regulate it with chain control levels.

we get 6 inches of snow and the shopping malls are still full of people, we got a foot last week, and the only things that close are the schools, i still went to work, and out of a crew of 25 people, only 2 called in
1" is a heavy frost, of course the bikes are put away until late april here

Same here. We've had snow on the ground in some parts of the city for a month now.

            I remember....

When I lived in upstate NY it was unheard of to close any road due to weather. They did plow though and put on sand and salt, but you were responsible for the decision to put on chains or not and most just put on snow tires in the winter and that was it. PA does not use salt on the roads and it does build up to a thick hard pac. When you drive there you will notice that the driver behind you is way back there and if you get too close to the guy in front of you he will pull over and let you go by 'cause he don't want to get hit by some stupid person who don't know how to drive in the snow. I went back there a couple of years back in Jan and the day I arrived it snowed about 18". I had my stepmom's old Ford Grenada that was going to the junkyard when I left. Needless to say, I had a good time going sideways all over the country roads for a week. Wheeeeeee......

It has to snow at least a foot, in a few hours, to even consider closing roads here.

I can't imagine closing the roads for an inch of snow in a warm place. It takes a good week of below 0C to make the ground cold enough that the snow doesn't melt right away up here.

We still ride our bikes here until the snow actually STAYS on the road....
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

                Closed

Interstate 5 was closed yesterday @ 4 PM, poor people have to sit in the car in the cold until the HP decides to open the road. Can you imagine the problems that creates? News says now it's daylight they can see how much sand and salt they need to put on. I wonder how many they will find didn't make it through the night?

About two weeks ago it was 70 and i was riding my bike. Then along comes winter. It is too cold to work in my shop even though i can heat it.
Cold weather just bums me out.
Boss told me today that there was plenty of work and that she had sent a load to Boston with Sam,one of our drivers. I said,"Good for him." I want to go West and South. Laredo for instance.
I woke this morning 50 miles North of Cincinnatti and the roads were covered.
It would be a waste of money to wash my truck and it has not been washed in three weeks.
I was going through the mountains on I 68 and the truck was spinning in 17th gear @50 mph.
I just want to ride. And maybe cut grass. Roy

Ride the Rockies Rally group photo, Labor Day weekend,1991

I am on the Shadow 1100, with trailer on the far left side, Christine, my ex-GF is standing next to the bike.

It was snowing before we left Edmonton about 3pm Friday and snowed all the way to Mt. Robson B.C., about 4.5 hrs later.

It snowed overnight, and we drove to Jasper the next morning, an hour or so away.

Saturday we went out to Snaring River campground, then to Maligne Lake Lodge for supper.

This picture was taken in Jasper on Sunday Afternoon.

Then we rode back to Edmonton Sunday late afternoon.

The rest went back to where ever they came from. Some were from Vancouver, Prince George, Grande Prairie, Saskatchewan, etc.

Jorges, the organizer wiped out a borrowed bike on Friday night, not because of the snow, but because of some road construction on the highway.

Here in Bowling Green they hear snow they get the salt out. And when it does snow enough to close the town it's funny. When I lived in Colorado there in Elizabeth I had seen more snow then I ever care to see or deal with again. The mountains can keep all the snow. Sorry to feel this way just all the darn shoveling. Can't tell you how many times you clean the drive way just to have road crews come and plow them back up.

As John said It sure is Pretty but I don't miss it.

                              Snow and Hurricanes

Well we can handle a hurricane down here but snow? The last time it snowed in New Orleans we got about 1". It took me 1 1/2 hours to get home and my office is only about a mile away. Hell, it was easier getting back into town after Katrina!
