with F-4 crews achieving 393 aerial victories and completing countless ground attack sorties. The F-4 Phantom has the distinction of being the last United States fighter to attain ace status in the 20th century.
Its was also the only aircraft flown by both the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.

You are right about the Phantom, a plane so good, the Air Force coveted it even though it was developed as a carrier plane. It was effective, high performance and deadly. Some say it was ugly, but I think it is one of the best looking airframes of all time.Papa Gino

Hate to say it... but agreeing with Pro.
The F-4 simply proved the point that if you put enough HP behind it... even a brick will fly!
I was thinking there was an Israeli pilot with an F-16 that got Ace status... but I may be wrong.
Having worked on many of the recent planes (A-7, A-10, F-5, F-15 A-E, F-16) I can say that the A-10 was my favorite. The cockpit area has a titanium bathtub shape around the pilot that can withstand a direct hit from a Russian 37mm round. Theoretically, if it's missing half a wing, one engine, and half the tail.. even all on the same side, it could fly home. It could carry another A-10 under it's belly if you could hook it up. But the best thing is the GAU-8 30mm cannon that the plane is built around. It will stall the plane if the trigger is held too long! Look up the specs on the round this thing shoots... they start firing at 7 miles away! I've got a nice story of how we had one of the guns in our shop that was jammed and it went off!! We made world wide military news.... not in a good way.
It's not a fighter.... but dang sure wouldn't want to be anywhere around on the ground where it was attacking. Especially not any type of vehicle or tank!

Since we have hijacked this thread into a discussion on great planes..
How about the AC-47 and it's descendent the AC-130 for CAS? I had an old Senior MSGT as a ROTC instructor in the 70's who was a gunner on board a "Puff". He said the Cong feared the 47 more than an F4 or other fast mover because the jet would roar in, drop a bomb or two and take 3 miles to get turned around. The Puff could hang on a slow turn and pour fire down into one spot in the jungle for a long time.
One other favorite, neither fast, deadly or dangerous, but certainly beautiful and a great asset was the KC 135. I loved em as a kid, because that was what my Dad maintained. He loved em too.Papa Gino
