Gone again for work

Well, I'm off to the other side of the pond for eight days. I'll be working at a lab up near Oxford. If any of our UK riders know the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, that's my work location. If you are nearby, please send me a pm, and I'll try and "hook up" so we can enjoy a pint. I will have a car, so I can drive for about 30 miles in any direction. My dates are November 11, arrive at Heathrow 13:30. November 20, leave Heathrow 11:40. I will have the 19th off, and possibly the 18th as well.
I will be able to post a local cell number once I'm in the UK.
I know this isn't close to XS11 stuff, but I would like to see some of the bikes in EU trim.

I feel your pain brother, I am currently lanquishing in a hotel in Raipur, India. it's 5:00 am on a saturday, I've been in country for a week and a half and am still not completely acclimated to the time difference...oh well, I guess I be fully adjusted by the 8th...when I go home. oh, by the way, it's hot and humid here...i'd guess somewhere in the 90's during the day, the mosquitos are somewhat xsive, but the food is mighty fine, the only real drag about it is I miss my XS....and the family . all take care as I will be home to the chill of S.W. Ohio before I know it. caio

Just got another e-mail yesterday from "Raytheon" recruiting center.
They need snowmobile/ATV mechs, warehousemen, fuel handlers, firemen, welders, construction, drivers, supervisors, managers... the list is endless.
Summer at the South Pole isn't really that cold, though the women are a little frigid.

I couldn't tell you what Ray does but, I am but a lowly electronics techinician. I do field service for a company which manufactures, sells, and services thickness gauging equipment to the steel, aluminum, and ceramics industries. we use X-Rays to do comparative measurement to known sample thicknesses. it allows the steel mill to control the thickness of what they are rolling without making contact with the steel, and without having to stop the mill to take a reading. comes in kinda handy when your rolling in a hot strip mill and the steel averages approx. 1600 degrees F. it's kind of a niche market...slightly obscure, but very neccesary. that's it in a nutshell, have a nice day and ride safe.

I'm betting it pays pretty well though. How long is the contract?

Actually, would've paid less than I was making at Cycle Mart.
6 month contract. Antarctic Summer or Winter Over.
Pretty stringent medical requirements due to the lack of facilities down there. (recall the story of the doctor with breast cancer and there was no way to fly her out)
After I had an disqualifying exposed wisdom tooth pulled,($400, my cost) they wanted other tests done due to my cholesterol being three points higher than allowed.
I had to take a treadmill exercise test...(their cost)
which led to EKG's, MRI's with radioactive crap in bloodstream, and then the anginogram...(glad I'm a retired Vet. No cost!) all due to an odd electrical spike that showed up during the treadmill test.

And all this time, TRBIG, you though I was heart-less...
(I have one... it just functions a little differently, but is normal, though black and cold at times.)
I'd never be able to do the "Winter Over" gig, as there is a Psych. Eval that you must pass, though you might be able to bluff your way through it)
Anyway... all the extra tests put me past the window for the flight down there, so I didn't make it.
Would like to send my son. 21, no job, sleeps all day...

My title is "Reliability Engineer". What I do is break electronics. I work for a company that makes chips, and I test them for Atmospheric Neutron effects. I get to put parts in front of Neutron Beams, and do Atmospheric testing on mountain tops and deep underground. The pay isn't that good, but it's a FUN job. I've been to Los Alamos about nine or ten times, UC Berkley, UC Davis, and the Navel Surface Weapons Facility. Now I'm going to the UK site, and I get to use my parts and experience working with a PHD student and professor.
I lucked into the job, and I'm happy with it. I feel I have the best job in the company, because I'm one of two people that does this, and the other person is my boss. I don't have to worry about politics, as the CEO and the Board is behind what I'm doing.

Ray, Pay not being good is a relative term. Do you have DoD clearance for a job like that?

No clearance needed. I work for a private company, but we publish all findings, good and bad.

I've been scouring for a better paying job than what I have. Definitely looking for more FUN! Currently slaving away for the State of Texas at the Texas Youth Commission in the Crockett State School Facility. Boring desktop support. We never really get to make any decisions for ourselves. I feel like the longer I'm here the dumber I feel. Some people would enjoy the stability of it but I don't like the idea that my salary is capped forever.

I miss a job I had that was downsized. It had computers, travel, thinking on your feet. Supervise yourself. If anyone knows where that job is now let me know!
