  • Missing tech tip

Deep in the bowels of past posts is THIS post about removing tank rust through electrolysis. I wanted to bring it to the front, add a little info, and recommend we add it to the tech tips section.

I am currently doing this on the SWMBO CB500 resto-project and have spent the last two days driving to every grocery story in my and neighboring towns to find Arm and Hammer Washing Soda with no luck. So, I did some research and found that it is also available as PH increaser/soda ash/carbonate soda at pool and hot-tub supply stores.

The 650 site has such a great write-up, I don't see any reason for a new one. I think this would be a good addition to the tech tips.

    Hi 81,
admittedly it's a long trek from Eureka CA but our Safeway in Saskatoon sells washing soda from the same aisle as all the laundry detergents. As I have a "some day" electrolysis project for a rusty spare tank that I have, I picked up a box one time when I was muling the cart as my wife grocery shopped. Thing is, my beloved has started to put the stuff in the washing machine along with the detergent! Just because it says on the box that's what it's for. To keep peace in the house, best I simply go buy another box and stash it in the garage.

        Caswell

According to the application instructions the tank does not have to be rust free, just the loose stuff gotten out.
        Only $26 too

I had to do the rear brakes on the jeep today. I found that the adjustment wheel at the bottom was rusted/friction welded together.
I torched the friction weld part loose and used the electrolysis method at the link above to clean up the threaded part and that thing came out shiny after only a few hours. I was thoroughly impressed.

          Thanks for the info.

OK, this thing is freaking sweet!.
I put a paint mixer into the bucket before I left for work today. Came home and its actually shinier and cleaner than when I bought it.
            Stripped the paint right off.

Now I'm looking around the house for other rusty things I can put in.

Yeah, the tank that I think was left full of gas to dry for 35 years, is now spotless.

For tanks, por15 does a similar thing wihout electrolysis, dissolves rust like magic and leaving a shiny surface, just slosh some thru the lid and swish it around, turns the bare metal to some chromate or some type of oxide that chemically bonds to the silvery metal layer that goes on last. Vinegar's another one for sharpening blunt files, leave the blunt files soaking 24 hours or so, don't overdo it or they'll dissolve, if you got your timing right, out they'll come sharp as new

unless you are refering to a rust remover they also make, the POR15 that I have used is a very tough paint/sealer of sorts.
