Oh yeah....almost forgot. Even a 5th gear roll on from 35 MPH....still very impressive...love to do that. Saved me and the wife from a charging dog one day...Didn't even have time to downshift and didn't matter...Glad the wife held on!

          Hey Bob,

Great post! If only Yamaha had put a caged needle on 5th gearwheel - then it would have been perfect!

Your mention of the venerable TZ750 caught my eye. I have a 1974 TZ700/750A; I could never afford one when I was roadracing (the XS11 pulled me through), but now that they are basically antiques (as I am becoming myself), I have the honor of being the current Keeper Of The Beast. I would like to get it serviced out over the winter, and hopefully run an occasional AHRMA event or track day next season. The hardest part will be knocking off the 20 lbs to get back in my leathers - lol. Do you know of, or are there any other, TZers out there that have a line on parts for the old smoker?

          Later,
          Warren
Sure it's gonna make some noise, there's GAS exploding in there!

                Have not read his book...yet

But one of my 79 specials happens to have this on it

Been meaning to email Bob to see if he would let me know the bikes history.

Sent Bob Jones an email this morning asking about the special.
Hope he has the time to respond. Would be really cool if he had pics of when they had the bike...but think it may have been done before they started doing that.

Jones said he is about 3/4's the way thru a second book as of about two months ago and just had a crash at 65mph when the rear end locked up. See what happens,he has got to be about 70 by now.
But rereading parts of the book again, yuppers we made a fine decision on buying the 1100...best over all bike on the road.

"I have often wondered why the X11 crankshaft rotates in a clockwise direction so thanks for the information Bob."

                      Hi '44,
the one great improvement that Japanese motorcycle builders made common practice but get very little kudos for is the two-shaft all indirect gear transmission. This set-up allows the primary reduction to be a pair of gears rather than sprockets & a chain because the clutch runs "backwards" in a two-shaft transmission so the engine can still run "forwards".
Seems to me the Yamaha designers wanted the XS1100 primary reduction to be via a Hyvo chain rather than via two gears but didn't want to revert to a Britstyle concentric shaft transmission (where the clutch runs "forwards") and as a consequence were forced to make the XS1100 engine run "backwards" too.
