Gotta love the people here that still have tons of passion for these bikes! Bought my first MNS in '80..sold it in '86. Was thinking about buying a HD..said to myself...what the ? Found another '80 MNS on this site.....rode it...and bought it...never looked back...and never will..

You should try contacting Bob Jones at Merriam Cycles direcly, and buy the book. You could ask that he sign it. When he attended the TexSive rally this spring he had brought about 20 copies, and sold them, numbered and signed . Mine is #257.

                John,
I went to his site and was directed to Amazon but you just gave me a great idea,I now have a new destination to ride to.See some new country and get the book signed and meet the man.Never thought of that before.Good call...after I read the book.Until I came on this web site I thought I was a loner,an outcast,no one else around here that I know of or see rides one.
But I still feel like I am XS Special:-)

                  pod filters and water

Ive gotta lot of respect for Bob Jones,
but it annoys me how he claims that
bikes with pod filters cant b/ shouldnt b ridden in the rain,
unless those pod filters are made of paper,
ive never had a problem with them, at worst
when they are saturated with water and usually
this is the only case after ive washed the bike, the bike
gets a little bogged down which doesnt last for long.
and at worst if water does get sucked in and im sure
some does, its not going to hurt the bike.

so im curious any1 with pod filters, have they
ever had any problems with water/rain.

                    Hey Pete,

I had a set of the can shaped Unifilters on mine a few years ago, and got caught in a gully washer coming back from a rally, and only when I slowed down in city traffic it did bog a little, but just reached down and compressed the filter....pushing the end inwards towards the carb to wring out the Xs water, and it was fine! I also rode it from Va. to Pa. in the rain 1 day, no problems on the highway whatsoever!

As I keep reading the book I am wondering how many of you run at 85~90 on a regular basis.I am a wuss while riding,I like to sit back and smell the diesel fuel as I ride. I wanna see every historical marker and small town as I ride,I love the back roads at 60,my preferance. When I am out riding I have no specific time goals. I don't ride that much but have almost 72,000 on the bike.
The more I think about it and is pointed out in the book many times,we do have one of the best all around bikes on the road. The more I read the more I just wanna pack up and hit the road to wherever..ahh to be unemployed and no responsibilites......as Willie might say"On the road again........

John, I just checked mine. Bob signed it 5/17/05, #147.

Bob's book is a decent read; the guy has had some pretty crazy experiences on his XS's. Although you'll be disappointed if you jump into it expecting it written like William F. Buckley, Jr. would. All told, I think anyone who puts a quarter million miles on an XS has earned some serious street credibility. And I don't think WFB rides an XS.

Finished reading the riding part of the book and into the upkeep of the bike.Enjoyed the rides he made, faster than what I like but will go back over and look at a map to see where he was riding.Judging from the twisties he was riding along with the sweepers sounds like some nice places to ride, but not so fast on my part:-)Between this web site and the book I admit my wanting to ride blood is stiring again.Put on a thousand miles the last three weeks going nowhere. Got a nice bike ride planned the first weekend of october for three days.I am gonna meet up with a group of HARLEY riders:-) in Logan OH for a couple of days in Hocking Hills state park.
                              Not a bad read,written like you or I write,straight forward,to the point,glad I bought it.
