Good Morning!! I am a new member from Sebring Fl. Bought my first bike at age 48 - 1980 Honda cm400T and rode it until 6 months ago. I found this site and have fallen in love with the XS1100. So much that I found one locally that the original owner bought in 1981. Only had 8000 miles on it and was run weekly just to keep things working. He advertised in the news paper for a 1981 Yamaha. I called him and went to look at it - it was great. Ran well,no leaks and I was in love. I then asked him why he was selling, after all he was the original owner, and he said he was too old and this was too much bike for him. To make a long story short, He sold it to me for $650. I was and still am in heaven. I don't have any problems yet with the bike but I do know where to come if I do. Thanks for this site - it is a wealth of info. I will post photos as soon as I figure out how.

Photobucket.com is also free and doesn't have the limits of uploading. There are a couple others, but those are the two that most use I think.

$650 for a XS with 8k?!! From past experience, I should warn you that there will be dozens of problems with this bike and it will drive you nuts. On that note, contact me immediatley so I can make arrangements to take it off your hands.

Since this site is the home of the experts, may I ask a question? Being new to the Xs11 world, what is the difference in the XS and XJ?

They finally got all the problems ironed out of the XS... and called it an XJ! OK.. Maybe just a little biased...

There are a lot of things different. Most as a matter of fact, but they do have basically the same engine with a few differences, but the heart and soul of the drivetrain are mostly interchangeable.

                    Thanks Tod...

for that most enlightening explanation of the differences... There will be no possible way anyone could confuse the two of them now.

(what do you mean this post of mine isn't helpful either? No... you didn't say it... but you were thinking it... I know you were... the voices told me so.)

                      Be careful

                      Hi Dad,
if your only other riding experience is a 400cc Honda, let's be careful out there.
The XS1100 has not quite 3 times the engine capacity and at least 3 times the horsepower. It also runs out of handling 20mph before it runs out of power.
Weird stuff, it shifts like a Russian tractor and didja know the engine runs backwards? Not like an old Scott that would sneeze at a traffic stop and start running backwards (and that can be disconcerting) but it's designed to turn that way to cope with the one too many geartrain reversals in the shaft drive system. Be that as it may, I still love my XS11SG
The XJs have swirly mags and don't go quite as fast but still a good machine.

Thanks for the concern. At first it was quite the experience. I have ridden to work every day for the last 6 months( well, almost) and have gotten used to the power and handling, but never too comfortable.always cautious. I love this machine. Several people have asked me about it when I stop for gas. When I tell them, most of them say " I remember those bikes, where did you find one?" All I say is looked in the right spot at the right time. I am blessed indeed

Yup...XJ's got a bad case of the ICKY's that XS's don't suffer from.

The swirly mags make it look like it's going fast even when it's stopped! With just my pods and '78 cams... I'd run mine stoplight to stoplight against any stock XS. BUT... I do have those YICS ickies plugged off. I do love the look of some of the XS's, but I do love the sportier look of the XJ.... girly swirly wheels and all! lol.
