    Hi Dad11special!

Welcome to the site. Great find on your new baby.
Since this site is the home of the experts, may I ask a question? Being new to the Xs11 world, what is the difference in the XS and XJ?
Didn't know you would unleash a firestorm with such a simple question did ya!

We do love our bikes whichever letter follows the X!
Of course I have the best of both worlds.. XS & XJ!

    Oh yeah....We love the pictures!!!!

Since this site is the home of the experts, may I ask a question? Being new to the Xs11 world, what is the difference in the XS and XJ?
      Main differences are:

      XJ:
Uses an LCD display pannel in the gauge cluster.
Has a brush-style alternator, higher output to power the LCD display, makes engine wider on right side.
Front and rear suspensions are air adjustable as well as damping adjustable.
Uses the YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System) intake design, requires a special tool to synch carbs.
Like the '81, the XJ (sold in US in '82 only) has an all-electronic ignition system, does not use the mechanical advance system found in the '78 - '80 XS 11s.
Has a linked braking system, left-front and rear caliper activated from the foot brake lever, right-front caliper activated from the front brake lever.
Has an oil level sensor instead of an oil pressure sensor.
Again, shares the 'swirl' wheel design and slotted brake rotors with the '81 models, earlier XS11s have solid rotors and 'straight' wheel spokes.
Various electrical differences, like interlocks on the clutch cable and a side stand switch that is supposed to keep you from riding off with the kickstand down or starting the bike while it is in gear. Upshot is that the XJ's wiring is a bit more complicated than the XS.
Handlebar mounted choke cable instead of the earlier lever-operated choke system.
OEM battery has a fluid level sensor.
Front and rear master cylinders have fluid level sensors.
Square handlebars, adjustable for swing (width) and rise (vertical) to fit a particular rider better.
Factory fork brace built into (under) the front fender.

There are other differences as well, mostly cosmetic but some mechanical, but you find differences between all the XS/XJ models, the Standard, Special, and XJ so you would have to compare specific models to list more of the other differences.

The XJ is generally considered to be the slowest (1/4 mile times) of the 1100 series, as Yamaha was having to address emissions issues by '82. However, with it's 5 gallon fuel tank, all-electronic ignition, adjustable handlebars, adjustable suspension, slightly lower seat height, and other refinements it is also one of the more 'rideable' Yamahas out there.

Thanks for the info. It seems that there are pros and cons to both but it does'nt really matter. A great bike is a great bike no matter what the differences are. I will post pictures as soon as I find the time. I still love my bike!!!

I love the looks of my XJ. I think that the only thing that I would possibly trade it for is a midnight special. Any takers?
