  • Parts bike or restore ?

I am a new memeber here and could use a little help.

First let me say I have really enjoyed checking out this site.
I wish I had found it a lot sooner.

    I have a 1979 XS1100SF that I purchased new in April of 1979.
I encountered some of the problems that have been discussed
here on the forum. I became disenchanted with the bike and
after several failed attempts to sell it many years ago I parked
it in the garage and it sat. Now many years later I have been
tempted to try and get it going again. I believe the bike will need a major going over to get it back on the road.

So the question is to rebuild or sell as a parts bike?

How do you determine? Any input would be welcome.

Around here, you are going to be hard pressed to get a 'parts bike' answer to your question. One member pulled his out of a swamp and got it going. If the bike is all there, we can definitely help you get it going again. The help on this site is amazing, and there are probably some XSives not too far from you that might even go out of there way to help you in person. Yeah, we're kinda sick around here. Welcome aboard. The answer to your question; RESTORE! (you won't be disappointed)

yeah bakerfield is a short ride for me and planedick, los angeles, and yorba linda, just first go ahead and do the basics, clean the carbs, check connections, charge the battery, change the plugs, and discribe what the problem is...

and check back often for the cure.

        easy question

        restore restore!!!

There are very few cooler things to do in my book than getting another XS11 on the road again.

And, no doubt these folks (oops I am one) are all nuts enough to go way outta their way to help get em running again.

There were rumors(fact) floating around that there was a meeting in Texas to work on bikes. I attended. I had a great time helping work on a motor for a guy from OK.

Seems like we'll be making that a habit. Maybe there will be lots more all throughout the states. Could you imagine if every state had a yearly meeting of the minds???? Just another reason to get together with fellow XSives and BS about anything and fix bikes at the same time. I for one will attend every one I can.

I say RESTORE it!!! Your bike was stored inside in your garage so it's a prime candidate for RESTORATION. The bike I currently enjoy owning sat for 10 years and I had it running the following morning. All that was needed was a fresh battery, fresh oil, fresh gas a shot of quick start.

                Definitely RESTORE!

Like others wrote, it's all there, so it probably won't be much trouble to get it going again. Compared to some here, yours should be a piece of cake.

It sounds like too much work to restore or bother disassembling.
I'll do you a favor and bring the trailer on down and haul it off for you .
I won't even charge you for gas.

                          Skip,
If you need the transmission fix, pickup coil fix, and carb clean it should take about 30 hours of work to get it going. Parts are cheap from Andreas, and we may be able to put together a "help squad" from some of the California owners.
As Pat lives only two hours away, and has his engine apart at the moment, he should be the first to be volunteered.

XS1100 SF Bob Jones worked on it!
