There's a really good reason why it's legal in places like California and not in places like the Great White North and other places that don't get 110 degree summers with stop and go traffic. All you have to do is take a look at your air cooled XS 1100 and imagine idling it in that kind of weather for over two hours in traffic.

When I lived in CA I knew people who got incensed at the lanesplitters; as if they were somehow doing something unfair like cutting in line. I always understood why they did it, though the ones that zip by at 65 mph were being a bit unsafe about it.

this post has become a little angry

Guns? Broken Arms? I thought we were just talking about splitting lanes.

This post has been beat to death ... wait ... that is just more of the same!

Less than half apparently never split lanes.
Most likely if I lived in an area without traffic problems would not either.

Road Rage here in CA CA land is alive and well...
Think it's one of the reasons I run across idiots in a cage who try to put the "squeeze" on me now and then. I do not split lanes as a normal way of ridding but mostly to keep bike cool. Even in cool/cold weather you can't sit stopped for too long with out the engine getting hotter and hotter.

Maybe next pole, what lane do you ride in on the freeway?
        (less controversial???)

Everyone that pays taxes ownes an equal share on the road. If it isn't hurting you, why would you care that someone is getting ahead of you. So what. It isn't slowing you down. I don't think it is ok to cut people off and do other insane things. That endangers other people. I must say though, I do drive on the sidewalk quite often. Heck, half the time thats where I park. I only do that when no one is around though. I think lane splitting shoud be legal in all places, especially Texas. Thats not just because I live here. Anything that is an incentive for other people to ride a bike instead of a cage is good news. I like it when car sales declines and bike sales increases. Texas traffic is bad enough with all the cars. You get where my perspective comes from?

I wonder how many side mirrors and door handles I would collect spliten lanes on a full dress hardbagger?

I will take advantage of the space between a car and the curb at right turn situations if the bike will fit.

Was a regular occurance when I rode my DT400 on the street.

heh, well, I can say my seatbelt was stuck in the door, or (if I smoked) I dropped my cigarette, or the door wasn't quite shut...

Basically, I wouldn't count on the courts finding on the side of the motorcyclist. They tend to have a blind spot that way.

If you, the big bad biker type, caused harm to some poor innocent civilian in thier car you may have a fun time explaining that to some stuffy judge who thinks all bikers are bent toward criminal behavior.

But it comes down to the fact that, besides being dangerous to weave between the cars, it's also downright rude. Why should you be able to jump the line, while everyone else waits. It's no different than guys wearing suits getting into a movie theatre first.

Wait your turn like everyone else.

Oh, and anyone who thinks you can't get away with opening your door, ask the cop who tried to pass me on the shoulder one day, with his lights and siren going....

                  Judges & motorcycles...

For those of you who are not AMA members, I should inform you that, thanks to the AMA's efforts, judges are now taking a VERY FIM view of those who cause injuries to motorcyclists. Most states have substantially increased fines and jail time for those whose actions cause injury or death to motorcyclists.

Again, for those of you who are not AMA members, you should join right away.... Many benefits

According to the rules of the English language there are several forms of the word "you." It can mean one specific person, or it could mean a group of people. I have been told that "you" could even mean no one, but I am not %100 sure about that. I was trying to use "you" as an anonymous figure to help everyone else understand my idea behind the comment. To rephrase the comment in question without the word "You," I will use the word "someone" to clarify my statement. If "someone" thought that I should not be able to pass them in traffic by utilizing a technique known as "lane splitting" because they were stuck in a immobile or slow status, their feelings would be childish. And thus, the answer to your last question would be an anonymous and fictitious character that no one should bother to think about.

So, according to your analogy, butting in line at the theatre, or the grocery store is ok?

and anyone who doesn't like it is childish?

Splitting lanes is kinda like owning a gun or drinking alchohol. If it is legal, then you should be able to do it IF you want. I tell you what...get rid of your guns if you own any, stop drinking, if you do and I won't split lanes if I feel the need arise. If you do drink, do you get in your car and drive home from the bar after tipping a few? If so, then I would like to see you go to jail for a while. I don't want you endangering my life or anyone elses. I myself drink very little, I out grew that kind of childish behavior years ago. Personally, I didn't split lanes when I was stationed in California, and it isn't legal here in Texas. Good thing, 'cuz some crazy gun totin' drunk bubba would probably take a shot at me, even if splitting lanes was legal. WK and I took my bike to LA, and San Diego in 92, and we were stuck in traffic on I 5 for a very long time. I saw many bikes and CHP copcycles doing it, but I didn't have the balls, cuz there's always some a**hole that would try to pinch you off.
How about taking up one parking space per bike? Do you do that or do you park more than one bike in one space? WK and I will park both bikes in one space, just out of CONSIDERATION for the other person.
So in a nutshell, if it is legal, then you should be able to do it if you want.
So there is what I feel is the other side of the story.
So keep it civil, and don't attack anyone personally or I will delete the posts.
Try me if you don't believe me.
