Well, what the others have to understand is that most of us have never lived, in 30 years of motorcycles for me, anywhere where splitting lanes was legal. So where I am from it is just idiots being rude and dangerous.

I also quit 99% of my drinking over 20 years ago, and I have yet to have an accident with my bikes. I got hit by another car in my hot rod once, nailed in an intersection by a 70yr old guy with no reflexes.

On the one bike per parking space, that is actually the law in most cities! Edmonton, Alberta tried to enforce it once, because the bike clubs were parking 5 or 6 bikes to a parking meter.

The following saturday these clubs came down and parked, one bike per stall, and took up about 30 blocks of downtown parking

The city immediately made 'special' parking spots just for motorcycles. Unfortunately, these are in front of the local pubs...
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

most of us have never lived

      Don't split lanes?
      Don't drink?
      Don't crash?
Don't like to park in front of pubs?

      Bummer >>>(that's California slang)

      Well..........
I confess that I do all of those things and a good deal more.

Just fail to see how going past parked cars on the freeway or even in town should upset anyone. (not counting the wacko's we have here, very small minority)

Do all things (well most all) in moderation.....and try to crash as "softly" as posible.

                  Right on John!!!
I think a couple of posters to this thread should take chill pills and/or anger management classes.
Yes I split lanes. It is LEGAL here under the limitations described elsewhere in this thread. I have had cops (who were probably riders themselves off duty,) wave me along when I hesitated because they were in one of the lanes ahead of me.
My biggest fear is that my mirror may just tip the mirror of an SUV and I'll wind up underneath a 18-wheeler.
My second biggest fear is that some disgruntled cage jockey will close the door on me... causing me to wind up underneath a 18-wheeler. I never considered that the disgruntled cage jockey might actually be a misguided XS11 rider!!!
I try to stay within the guidelines, but I see riders every day (most notably those wearing the distinctive red and white winged deaths-head,) who severely abuse the privilege.
Jeeze people, chill out! I don't think I've ever seen such a vituperative thread.

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
                  I've been riding since 1959.

May not always come across that way tho

                    Hey Liberty,
dodging mirrors can get dicey. I like the little economy cars as there mirrors are lower than XSes. Big SUV, pu trucks etc. sometimes require a little finness to get by em. Splitting lanes along side big rigs requires extra caution and I like to make eye contact with the operator when I can before doing so.

I know it. I can be a jerk if I work at it. My friends an I argue all the time. We say all kinds of stuff to each other. But the thing is, 5min later its like nothing happened. Thats just who I am. IMHO, you havn't got the full life expreince unless you get POd once in a while. Anyway, have we exhausted the splitting lanes topic? Have we covered all of the basis of our arguments? That way when Jo down the road reads this, he can decide for himself.

Heh, I like how people can assume, from a few typed lines, that people are showing any kind of emotion!

Lesson 1: If I ever get angry, I will type all in caps, just so you know.

Lesson 2: Never assume. ( You have no idea who is at the other end of a typed convo!)

And if I had to worry about ending up under an 18 wheeler for some minor traffic maneuver, I would simply avoid that move, legal or not.

What the heck... I'll jump on this one too

Splitting lanes isn't something I would want to do... I've seen people get squeezed out in traffic... and I've seen a few doors opened in front of others. Courtesy is getting to be more rare on the road and I don't want to take a chance with my bike or my life...
Does it make me angry when I see people pass me by splitting lanes? nope... just jealous...

A lot of it is a competitive mentality, I think... Some people don't like to be passed... at all... for any reason.... As proof of this point, try driving a mini-van (my Mom-mobile) and passing a sports car or Bubba in his truck. I've had lots of them go well over the speed limit just to keep ahead of me...

I understand the need to keep a bike moving when it is air cooled especially... unfortunately... not everyone understands... or cares...

I don't split lanes in stopped or moving traffic. It's not safe under any circumstances. If my bikes engine is getting too hot I will head for the far left or right lane shoulder and move along there at a slow pace.

Here in Cantaffordya moving at all either right or left of traffic will get you a ticket for sure. Probably something on the order of $400.

Hey, Crazcnuk, we have a city here in California called Capitola. They installed bike stalls, with one meter per stall, and charge the same amount as a car stall. As they DON'T ticket for multiple bikes per space, but DO ticket within one minute of an expired meter, most riders put two or three bikes per car meter. Saves a LOT of change, as it's $.25 per 20 minutes!
