    Like Another?

Nice work on the bike. I know of your project from the Ott-Motorcycles website.

Would you be interested in another XS1100 project? I turned down an 81 Special a little while ago, due to having no shop to work in (it needs work, obviously).

Odo shows 48,XXX kms on it.

I believe he still has it, didn't seem like there was anyone beating down his door at the time to buy it. He also has a Seca 650 he's trying to move. Price is right.

I may be interested if the price is right. Do you know what he wants for it?

First off, I'm not sure he hasn't sold it yet, but I was looking at in in mid January, and he wasn't getting a lot of interest. he re-listed a few weeks ago at a slightly lower price, so odds are good.

It's in rougher shape than the one you started with, so be prepared. You might be looking at a parts bike only.

He said he got it in payment (and the 650 Seca) for work he did for a guy (he's a cleaner). He was originally asking $1500, but he said he'd let it go for $800. With a bit of skill, you might be able to knock off some more, he seems "motivated" to move it on. $800 was my first offer and he didn't even blink.

When I looked at it, the main thing I noticed was the carb boots were badly repaired with what looks like Permatex gasket maker. The airbox was off, but he said he had it inside his house. The carbs were dirty, looked like a weeping valve cover gasket left unattended to. Tires look good actually, but the seat was torn. The exhaust needs replacing, it's rusted and dented on the right side. He has one right side panel, but the left is missing. Tank looks to be in decent shape, but I didn't check for rust. I didn't hear it run, so I have no idea about the engine or tranny.

Overall, it's seems like a doable project, just needs a guy with patience and skill. I have the skill, but not the patience to do another bike repair job out in the yard. Scrambling for tools and parts during a thunderstorm got old really fast.

You seemed to get through your project quite briskly, so I don't think you'd have any trouble with this one. Besides, you already have one good bike, so no need to rush.

Well ... I actually have 2 bikes ( One running and one in parts that I need of a frame for) and I have a total of 3 engines so this one not needed unless he was selling it as a non runner for parts for cheap. The last bike I got was given to me. It was also special in rough shape but there's lots of parts on it that are still good as backups.
I will however keep it in mind should a need arise.
Thanks for the info in any case

              Bike Rebuild

Hey Rob, that's really cool! You did quite the project here on this! Wow! Great job. I have done a lot on mine as well but not nearly as much as you have. I'd send you some pictures too but not sure how to send them on here! Thanks again, I'm going to read through your bike rebuild history when I have a few minutes.

                Getting There

Not much left to do now. Should be done by the end of the week.

Thanks John. I can't even begin to guess how many hours i have into this bike now. I started the rebuilding about a month ago. I still need a pair of stock rear shocks and fork tops to call it "STOCK" In the mean time I will finish her up over this coming week and see how she runs as a shock setup. Then I can get started on my personal every day use bike :-)

                      Did you

                      Hey Rob,

Did you do your own powder coating or did you send it out? If out what was the cost? If in where did you find an oven big enough for the frame?

The bike is looking awesome. It's good to see one that good looking about to be back on the road.

Hi Cajun ... No I didn't do my own powder coating. I just didn't have the time and as you pointed out the frame would not fit in the oven. I guess I could have done the small pieces myself but time was still an issue. The outfit that did the powder coating charged me 400 for the work.

Well I found some stock shocks in good shape and that's good :-) I started the carb restoration after work today and it looks like they are going to clean up nicely. It's amazing what can be done with a brass wire wheel. Once I get the carbs on my bike the finish will be all down hill. Carbs are about 1/2 done in these pics.

Got the carbs re-jetted back to stock this morning and finished cleaning them. They don't look too bad at all. QUESTION: How long should I wait before adding gas to the carbs after repairing a post with JB weld? I'm just about to head out to buy some new black fuel lines.

Geez, 79xsf11, after all that care and attention, are you going to put those carbs back on with those fuel lines? With that bit of discoloration, next to those beautiful carbs, that would seem like putting on yesterday's underwear.
