Hey all. I am new to yamaha 4 bangers but I do own 1 77d tripple.
I have had this bike for a week and I have fallen in love with this thing. What a killer bike. It can do it all. If any thing goes wrong with this bike I will looking for another.

This bike just has it all. I was leary of the Buckhorns but yesterday while out in the hills I was amazed at how well it handles. Tight corners and wide sweeping power turns yeeha.

I was wondering if any of you have experimented with differant bars on the special. I am not looking to cafe this bike ( My 77 d handles that ) But commfy cruiing bars. I am already getting used to these but what are you running.

trying hard not to comment on that. Although I am sure that prometheus will!

I have the buckhorns and after about 5 years am starting to get comfortable with them. There are many options from drag bars to clip ons. I really like the look of some of the peoples bikes here wth the drag style bars. Just have to find the right size. I think that I remember someone saying that they were 7/8 inch. I might be way off on that.

Anyone have ape-hangers?

Yeah, the buckhorns are a real PIT-Wrists, I found a set of early model Honda GoldWing bars have similar pull back but are angled and positioned wider so that they better align with my wrists, but I still get the ease of sitting back riding.

There are lots of bars to look at on MIKESXS.com, it's a 650 parts site, but many parts will work for the XS11, same 7/8" bars! Just don't ASK Mike about fitting or working on an XS11!! There are photos shown from above which helps you see the pull back and angle of the grips so you should be able to find some similar to the pullbacks but not so angled!

Yes, they do handle decently in the twisties much to the dismay of many Harley riders! Glad you're enjoying it, but as I posted in the other Tech Disc. Forum, you'll want to get those fluids changed before you do too much riding, have heard of folks burning up their middle and final drives from lack of oil!!

Being a Standard driver and owning a Special, I figured Yamaha designed the handle bars and tank as a set. One will keep you from having to put up with the other for very many miles.

Take a look at a set of goldwing bars. They have a better wrist angle and are a bit wider.

As for the tank, the easiest option is a Standard tank.

The two tanks are not 100% interchangeable, but pretty easy to do.

Both tanks mount to the bike the same way. The major area of difference is in the fuel lines. The Special has the Octopus and the Standard does not. So, going from a Special tank to a Standard tank is much simpler than going the other way round.

I suggest removing all the Special lines, including the octopus and stashing them with the Special tank. Buy new lines (fuel & vacuum) to connect the Standard tank.

I will keep my eyes open for the gold wing bars.

You can buy aftermarket bars with the goldwing bend at just about any bike shop.

Check out any local boneyards. I got a set of bars off a '78 GL 1000 for 15 bucks. Way better price than the 70-80 a shop could get a set of new for. Plus when you're at the boneyard, you actually get to see how it feels before you buy.

Goldwing bars

Hey guys the Gold wing bars are great!! I got a set of 78's off of Ebay and the guy sent me 2 sets. But anyway they are just what I wanted. I think it adds to the chopper style and comfort /control is much better. I started with them at the same rake as the forks and it looked good but settled with them pulled back even farther and just a tad lower. Thanks for the suggestion.

I was wondering if you guys re tourque your engine from time to time. I have been riding this road kill every night since I got it and I am getting some film around all the gaskets not much to drip but a wipe down.
