The PO had painted mine out black, I used some Testor's model paint to repaint the gold and then sprayed over with clear. So far, look great. I will try to get a picture when it is warm enough and things thaw around here in a day or two.

      Badge restoration

I bought a 18 Kt GOLD LEAFING PEN made by KRYLON at a local hobby store. It's not the same finish, but I think I'm going to give it a go. I'll strip the badges and spray bomb them flat black. The gold is very easy to apply with the pen. Once that's done, I suppose I'll have to turn it over to a professional for a gasoline proof clear coat.

Here is how mine turned out. For the tank at least, you could buy the "chrome" ones and paint them gold just the same.

          Side Cover Badges

FYI>Anyone looking for 78E Std side cover badges will soon be able to purchase from badge replicas in Austrailia. I sent one of my badges from my 78E to Brian (badge replicas au) to get replicated. He has sent word to me that they should be available in 2-3 weeks.

              Hey Foreda,

Did you happen to ask about the 10% shrinkage problem? I guess they use the OEM badges to make the sand molds for casting, and don't have any fancy way of enlarging them to keep the shrinkage from happening, and so the mounting holes don't line up exactly?

I tried the model paint technique, but my legs are so long they rubbed against the badges with my knees, and rubbed it off. I know there was a thread in the Product Review forum about a clear coat in a can that allegedly doesn't yellow on the engine cases, but not sure how well it will work over model paint. The model paint doesn't harden, and some clears I tried caused it to RUN.

OF course I've solved my badge problem by making my own with my one little home mill, but they don't say YAMAHA!

Like the GODZILLA badge, gives me an idea, my logged in name is (MORGZILLA). I think your badge is cool, however I need to keep my 78 XS110E std, looking like a factory original, thanks Morgzilla for the pics.

                  Shrinkage

I did not ask about shrinkage factor. You would think they could compensate for this??
I put these new badges on my 78 and did not have any problems. There was enough room to drill and re-tap next to the old hole. The only problem I had is the difference in color of the small area that the badge no longer covers. I am solving this problem by getting a new paint job.LOL That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

To be able to compensate for shrinkage, you would have to start out with an oversize original, to make the mold from. That would be hard to find.

A few years back, I dabbled with making replacement badges using some fancy two-part urethane casting resin. I started with a silicone product to make a two piece mold, then cast the replicas in urethane. This is actually a fairly simple process.

This was going well, but I was never quite satisfied with final quality due to the occasional small void caused by very small trapped air bubbles. This project is on my list to try again, only with a vacuum chamber that will ensure complete removal of air bubbles.

                        only thing

The ony thing I would be worried about and correct me if I am wrong is.....If one was to be 10% out would he not be ok, so far as copyright infringement? Would you not have a problem, if you produced these with Yamaha's original moulds? I hope it will work out ok but I just worry that this may snowball into something none of us need to see.

                          Badges Link

Hey...great link. Just wanted to point out that the price on these are in Australian dollars so you all don't freak out...not that $31.15 isn't alot, but it's better than $47.50. That's all. Have a great one!
