In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.
That XJ engine is an 1100, not a 750 and it looks like someone changed the jugs and put XS jugs on it. I don't see the YICS ports. The 10M on the serial # is an XJ1100.
Nate is right about the "XS" Engine. It's NOT an XS. Looks a little bit like an FJ engine. The carbs on it are most definitely 80 or later.

80 SG Ol' Okie;79 engine & carbs w/pods, 45 pilots, 140 mains, Custom Mac 4 into 2 exhaust, ACCT,XS850 final drive,110/90/19 front tire,TKat fork brace, XS750 140 MPH speedometer, Vetter IV fairing, aftermarket hard bags and trunk, LG high back seat, XJ rear shocks.
That looks like a Maxim 650 engine, part of Yamaha's XJ line.
And it debuted here in 1980 ...
Yep, I would bet a 1980 XJ650G. The valve cover matches and it was just before YICS was added to the 650. You can see the stator assembly tucked under the carbs.
