Not a lot at all. I personally use yamabond, but it or RTV are both good for machined surfaces, it's only a problem for surfaces that aren't nice and smooth machined surfaces.

Gaskets? We don' need no steenken' gaskets....

Yamabond is the stuff; $10 from the dealer. Only 'tricks' to use is to make sure the surfaces are clean and dry and don't use too much; it's runnier that 'regular' RTV. It's designed to 'flow' onto surfaces, so it won't leave a 'string' of squeezed-out sealer around all the sealed surfaces inside the motor. If you're worried about how well it works, that's what they used on the engine case halves at the factory and you never hear about those leaking....

Nope, get it applied, then install the part. Not very much is needed; 1/32" is thick enough and it sets fairly slowly, but don't dawdle during/after applying it. I always let it cure overnight before running the bike, but that's not really needed. The cam cover is the worst one to seal, because of how much lineal surface you have; you need to hustle a bit when doing this one.

Yamabond works great on tight-fitting machined surfaces; if there's issues with misalignment or damage (big gouges, cracks), then use regular RTV.

I think the reference is to the rubber seal under the fuel cap.

When I installed my replacement engine and put my old clutch cover and clutch parts in it since it came without a clutch, I use yamabond and didn't wait for it to cure and it hasn't leaked a drop.
