  • Looking for new valve shims

    Just completed a new valve job. Looking for the following shims. Must be new and unused...

    Need three 2.50's, two 2.55's, two 2.60's, and one 2.65

    Hi,
    I think you will find that you need to contact a dealer or aftermarket supplier to get brand new shims. Ive never heard anyone complain about using used shims if you can find them in the sizes you need. ymmv

      Agreed. No need to worry about the shims being used. We trade and swap them around the forum all the time. Never heard a single complaint.

        Interesting. My Clymer shop manual says to never reuse a pad since they do wear and their thickness is no longer accurate.

        If anyone has 2.50, 2.55, 2.60 or a 2.65, please let me know.

          I have checked thickness on a lot of used shims and the ones I have checked are either spot on the original thickness or thicker. So it does pay to check the thickness but used is not a problem.

              Used or not Used

              I would think that after you put the new/used/replacement shims in, that you'd check your clearences again. If the replacement shim is too big or too small, you'd know then. Even then, how bad can it be if it's off by a little? That's why they have a spread in the spec. As long as it's in spec, then use it.

                Sorry closest I could come was 2-255 and 2-265's but I did try. I do know of someone who has about 180 of the damn things but he has not answered my emails about buying them from him. I will maybe try one more time.

                  thanks for the link phil... I myself will be doing a valve adjustment soon. now where can you find a valve cover gasket without buying a whole gasket kit? www.georgefixs.com has the cam end plugs but cover gasket is eluding me

                      They are $12 here, you may need to order something else to make the minimum order. They may have changed that, it says $8.50 flat rate shipping. Problem is they are slow and ship just twice a week from Canada.

                            RTV is perfect for that and almost ALL other gasket surfaces on the bike. There are only 3 places that require real gaskets - the float bowls, head gasket, and exhaust gaskets. The fuel door gasket too if that counts. The entire engine can otherwise be put together with RTV without issue, and it actually works BETTER than a real gasket in many ways.
