old_skool...I got an absolutely killer deal on the old girl. $600 running, although she does need some TLC. She won't idle without the choke and stumbles on accel...the gas in the tank smells pretty rough so I'm betting the carbs are just gummed up. As far as rebuilding them goes, the only thing that worries me is gaskets and seals on 32 year old carbs. I don't know if they've EVER been apart, and I'd rather have parts on hand to put them back together than have to wait two months for something to come in the mail.

This is my first XS (and in truth...the first bike I've actually owned) so I'm JUST starting to learn my way around them. This forum was a nice find...lots of info scattered around here!
My Special is as old as I am.

It's really that they don't fade, but they also need to heat up a bit before they really work that well. They are a lot like semi-metallic on cars, with pretty much all the same pluses and minuses as well.

Ok, not sure why they are cheaper, and for the record, not my shop/store, I'm not the one selling them , was only trying to help this guy out I knew from another forum as he said he could get parts for our scoots, and whenever parts are available for the 1100's I usually don't balk away from at first as some things are getting harder to find. I think if you go to his site, he has an email account for questions, in addition, he's registered here, probably pm him. I haven't heard from him since he placed a generic order to carry some parts for us, but doesn't appear his site is updated yet. I know its hard to start up a new business while still working at another, may take a while?!

Paid about the same here, in about the same condition...lol, check those ebay links if you can't get a hold of this guy. And if your like me when you first get to this site, you'll be doing a lot of reading....a lot!! I know I am, and for the most part, most everybody here is helpful and extremely knowledgeable.

I had planned to put sintered pads on my bike. Some local friends who know a lot more about these things than I do, talked me out of it. It's because of the heat thing Cy pointed out. These guys ride with me. They steered me clear of the sintered pads on the street.

So, I'm passing along hearsay. I did not try the sintered pads. Take it for what it's worth.

And to +1 on what Marty says, I run sintered pads. I've also run organic. The only difference I've found between them is that the sintered pads don't perform as well for the first couple of stops (they need to heat up before they really work well), and they make a bit more noise than the organic. And the other is that if you do a LOT of braking, then they come into their own, because then they DO outperform organic as they suck more heat away and are more resistant to heating (they actually work better as they get hotter). However, they really SUCK in the rain till they get warmed up . And I do me SUCK! But they do warm up from just the little bit of drag you normally get from disk brakes, so after a couple of miles they work just fine, even less if you use them several times.

But, they don't really in my experience last any longer that I can tell. So it's a double edged sword. They are slightly harder on rotors, but IMHO ours are hard enough to cope just fine, they don't work as well till they get warmed up, but they work better under heavy use as they don't fade as quickly under really heavy braking use. At least this is my experience with them in MY use of them. YMMV.
