    gorp off

Have it home, rode around the block, nice and strong. Looks to have been a touring bike through it's life. No second gear concerns, mostly cosmetics and getting the rear foot boards off highway pegs off etc.. Then make a list of how far to go on this one.

SHMBO has already deemed me a moron. SHE'S EFFING RIGHT ! Look up the definition! SHE IS N0T aware of the 2 Standards that just went into a storage locker down the street. Got enough to keep me busy for a year of Sundays.

              pics of craigslist purchase 80SG

A few issues to iron out BUT RUNNING FINE. Why would the side covers fade and the tank remain almost without fade ? All original paint and the paint is perfect under the side cover emblems. Anyone with some Ruby red 80 SG covers ?

I've a 79 done in that color or very close, someone must have liked that 80 color and had it done on my 79SF, the red I remember back in 79 was much brighter, near fire engine red. Having a choice I bought the black back then.
I'm not sure why your side covers are different from the tank but maybe the fact that the paint is over plastic on the side covers made a difference ?
Or the tank was re-done ?
                  Thanks for the pics Vance.
                  Very nice indeed !

Sun fade on the upper edges of the side covers.

Still has the original paint, so it will stay that way. Probably sell in the spring. Will be road worth for sure.

Your side covers most likely need hand rubbed with some Mothers Mirror Glaze or similar rubbing/polishing compound to remove the oxidation.

                        faded but shiny

To repaint or not that is the question. They still look good and are not broken.

IMHO, the bike already has an aftermarket seat on it and currently has little to no collector value. It's a lovely bike, but if it were mine, I'd want a respray in the original color. The question is, can you get your money back if you paint it? It will have to be a 1st quality job and I think tough to get the return. I'd say polish it as best you can for resale, or paint it and keep it.

IMHO if they are as good as you state rub them out.

Here's, before & after, pics of my Pacifico lowers, and the fairing had the same oxidation:

                              Many Thanks for replies.

First quality paint would be about 700 bucks for the tank and side covers The chrome on the bike is about the best I have seen. The seat is the original pan, reworked by Sargent and it is niiiice. I think the best idea is to polish and sell or polish and ride or polish and keep or ?
