Unless you are needing to get at the wiring under there.

I do agree with you but I can't see any other reason why the bar would be like that other than that. Unless the designers just found It more asthetically pleasing rather than crossing the fender.

Wiring is all top-side. Have seen them put back on the other way........just looks SO wrong.

No, the wires go through the tail light housing and runs along the underside of the fender and then comes back up to the topside under the tail piece next to the tci.

17" Rear wheel and ignition has differences too but you can not see that in the picture

Phil, you have me curious. What are the ignition differences and what's the deal with the 17" rear wheel? Is this for the Venturer only?

            Hi MP,
Venturer has a 17" wheel on the back. I think some others may have it too. However the TCI (TDI?) is unique to the H and some other parts of the ignition are different from earlier years too though some carry forward to the XJ. You already know the fuel tank is bigger and also unique.
The fairing and bags may have been available as an option in 1980.

All standards 78-81 had a 17" rear wheel.

Phil, the TCI is the same for the SH, LH and the H. It is unique to the 81 model year though.
