Take the KBB prices with a large grain of salt; those have some assumptions built into them that may or may not always be true. I know around here, those prices are invariably low, usually by quite a bit.
With that said, a $3500 XS should be a pristine example with virtually no issues, cosmetic or otherwise unless it has some sort of 'history' or documented special features (owned by Elvis, special race bike, etc). But everybody is free to ask whatever they want.... it's the getting it that's the trick...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Super-nice all-original versions might fetch $3500, with the occasional MNS or '78E bringing more due to their rarity and/or desirability. Alterations from stock rarely add any value unless the mods are exceptionally well done or address a known problem, and even then, you'll be lucky to recover more than 20% of the money spent. You see this all the time in the HD market; a owner throws money at the bike for all the bolt-on chrome gee-gaws, then takes a bath on resale.Current Daily Rides / Projects

While I only paid $400 for mine, in running though not perfect condition, I suspect that if my wife managed to talk me into selling it, I would simply push the price beyond reasonable (though if someone were to offer my ridiculous selling price, I would take it and buy 2 more)
Just a thought. My guess here is that $3500 (-whatever he thinks is his haggling range) is what it would cost for him to not have this bike anymore. I know I would require around $4000 before I would see mine go... any takers?
Also, what parts? That makes a bit of difference. I agree that more info and pics would be required for this to be taken seriously. I also hope that he hasn't been heckled away, so we can get answers.Last edited by Hmar; 09-08-2011, 05:01 AM.1981 XS 11 special

What do they think they have anyway?
I saw that one bike listed on here for sale too. $3000 I am beginning to think the only people that are reasonable are the Harley owners. Seen several lately that looked like very decent deals, no giveaways, but very fair prices. Someone was trying to sell an 80' Kawi 550 today at a garage sale for $1000 but he would "listen" to offers. Almost choked on my gum! In contrast a guy had a very well put together 1200 Sportster ( 95' I think) with new paint that actually looked good (alot of paint jobs don't look so good) and he was in the $4000 range. At least with the Harley you won't get hurt if you need to get rid of it in a pinch but try getting a $1000 out of that 550 in a hurry, what a laugher!Current Daily Rides / Projects
