  • Need a Transmission

My transmission blew up today, at the worst possible time. Of course when is it ever a good for a tranny to blow up. I've spent the last 6 months and $500 getting this bike going. I finally got it running in time for a charity poker run tomorrow and I've been looking forward to it for a couple weeks now. I took a ride to the parts store for a new windshield, sissy bar pad, highway pegs, etc. On the way back, you guessed it, blown tranny.

Now my motorcycle is stranded 20 miles from home. If anybody has a new or rebuilt transmisson that will fit an 81 special, I would like some info on it. Also if anyone has info on what years will interchange with the 81 so I can keep my eyes open for more, that info would be appreciated also.

You looking for the tranny gears, middle drive, or final drive?

Any of those things interchange between all xs11 and xj11 years.

I'm not sure. The bike is still stranded 20 miles from home. I know I can put the bike in neutral, start it, but it will not push more than 3-5 feet before something catches and the back tire starts dragging. I'm pretty confident it's not the rear caliper/brakes. I tried to start in first and the back tire locked up and the bike ended up on its side. I decided to just park it there and pick it up later. Second gear was out of it and I've been riding it, just skipping past second so I'm afraid something broke loose and wedged in the tranny or something....

Before dropping the coin on a tranny, try to isolate the problem to a specific component. Could be anything along the drive train. Did you notice any noise coming from the front, middle, or back of the bike before it had its 'incident'? Might be good to post this in the Discussion forum. You'll get a lot more replies from people who know a heck of a lot more than me. Just my $0.02.

+1. Figure out exactly what went FUBAR and I'm pretty sure I'll have whatever you need.

5-6 feet is just about the circumfrence of the rear tire, so if a tooth were jammed, that would explain it.
Take the spring off of the u-joint rubber boot, push the cover back, and 4 bolts will disconnect the u-joint from the middle drive.
Still won't roll? Get a new final drive, or take that one apart and see what caused it.
I figure it is easier to take the u-joint bolts out, and check, than it is to take the rear wheel and final drive off. Then again, if it isn't the final drive, and you have it off, you have the perfect reason to take the swing arm out, clean the bearings, relube the rear splines, and be done with that.
