The first bike I had was a 500 Triumph with a Smiths clockwork tach as the only instrumentation on it, if you don't count the little plunger that poked out of the case if the oil pressure was up.
So, as a test to see if your son has been paying attention in school, get a calculator and the gear ratios out of the spec sheet, measure the diameter of the rear wheel, and figure out what RPM's are what.

p.s. I don't think a speedo will cure the problem. Making him pay the tickets, and losing his license, might. -
Thanks. We already did the rpm thing with him driving beside me at specific speeds so he could note his speed via the tach. Meantime we picked up a gauge cluster from Andreas from ax XS650 that works just great. Now we just need to hook up the tach to the alternator.1980 XS 1100 Special
