I'll be riding down from St. Louis on Thrusday, and stopping just inside the OK border for the night. Then, I'll take off again on Friday morning, and Drake and I will meet up at his place, then go the rest of the way to Hurst. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with any major mechanical issues on the way.

For those wanting (needing) extensive work done...
Please plan on being here as early as possible... either Thursday or Friday EARLY... like, before noon...
Also... if the jobs you want done require gaskets, o-rings or parts... please make sure you have those in hand... Even if you think the ones on there might be reusable... 'cause sometimes... they aren't...
draketrumpet... as to your list... number 8? ALWAYS!

As to the parts, that's my other conundrum. I don't know everything that might or probably needs doing, but these are the parts I've gathered so far:
fork oil seals
3 used intake boots
2 petcock rebuild kits
set of brake pads
If someone thinks I really need to get something else, please, let me know. My goal I guess in going is not just to get a bunch of work done, but to also learn how to do the things I'm unable (financially) to do at this point so I can do them on my own as able.
Are bearings generally reusable with packing? That was the impression I got.1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

That's our goal too... The general idea is that whoever owns the bike... does the work... The rest of us just point and snicker...

carbs
If we decide to clean the carbs, that not the same as doing a whole rebuild I presume. In cleaning them, are there any things that I need to get that might need replacing due to something like braking them? I think I've read somewhere here that stuff inside is almost always reusable.
Thanks.1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

Things I found that sometimes need replacing:
Float bowl gaskets - sometimes they tear while removing the bowls
Idle jets - PO's have a tendency to strip the heads and then they either can't be removed, or once you remove them with an easy out its silly to put them back.
Idle mix screws - Again PO's have a tendency to strip the heads off them, or break the tips off them and then they need replacing.
Idle mix washers and o-rings - PO's tend to misplace them, or they will be hard and need replacing.
Float valves and seats - always a good item to replace, but if yours aren't leaking probably not required.
If you look at buying all the above items, you might be better off the order the rebuild kits from georgefix on e-bay.1979 xs1100 Special -

Looks to me as if there is no 'WE' in rebuilding YOUR carbs You will want to have new bowl gaskets and you can get by with cleaning the float needles and seats, but my personal preference is to replace them. It's cheaper than replacing bearings that get burned up from a gasoil mix.

Randy is a bright one... that's why we keep him...
I was just messing with you D...
Carbs aren't a big deal (even a girl can do them)
Some of this was just covered (and thank you guys for chiming in here) but I like to restate things... 'cause I can...
You can get by with making your own gaskets if absolutely necessary... but unless you have replacement seats... I (note... I said I... someone else might say otherwise...) wouldn't pull those... They don't always get warped when removing... but it does happen...
The jets can get buggered up and it's nice to have replacements just in case...
We have a few... but they may not be the size you need...
If you just want a tutorial on carb cleaning... we can help you out on that without pulling your carbs... We have test subjects...

syncing
Hmm...I guess I really should clean the clean the carbs if I'm going to sync them. Seems like they need to be cleaned for a sync to be effective. I'll get on buying some of those rebuild kits just in case...sigh...SWMBO is not going to be happy.1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

I have always used a guy in ebay named "Georgefix". Tell him what model and year your bike is, double check the carbs are from that year and have not been swapped out, and tell him any mods you have or what jet sizes you want. He will build a custom kit for your bike and his prices are good, his jets are good, and his delivery is pretty quick.
Honestly, rebuilding your own carbs and knowing them in detail and making sure all is right in them will save you so much time and headaches and even money chasing ghost problems later, it is money WELL spent IMO.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

I verified carbs 1&4 are stock, would it be a normal mod to run 2 different kinds of carbs? PO said 2&3 had slightly different jet sizes on either pilot or main, but he did remember which.
Either way, it's a little late as Mr. Georgefix already shipped them...when I ordered them only 3 or 4 hours ago. He's quick.1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012
