The conversion factor for mpg <> km/l is approx. 2.43
(it's really 2.42766)
mpg = km/l * 2.43
km/l = mpg / 2.43
37mpg = 15.241 km/l
14 km/l = 33.9878mpg

1 US Gallon = 3.7854L
1 Mile = 1.6093km

rough speed guidelines (that 'minor' khp scale can be hard to see)
40kph=25mph
50kph=31mph
80kph=50mph
100kph=62mph
110kph=68mph

And last but not least:
$1.00 US = $1.587 Can.
$1.00 Can. = $0.63 US

A while back, when British Columbia changed over to metric speed signs, there was a series of radio and TV spots with a simple musical jingle that went:

Twenty.. gives you thirty..
Thirty.. gives you fifty..
Fifty.. gives tou eighty..

So, twenty (mph) gives you thirty (km/h) - close enough!

For some reason, the metric version of fuel consumption (in Canada at least) is L/100km. Never did figure out why we did not just switch over to km/L. My bike gets 7L/100km, which translates into about 40mpg...Imperial Go figure!

Thanks, Norm - that's the way they do it in Europe (called DIN, whatever that stands for).

8L/100km = ~30mpg
7L/100km = ~35mpg
6L/100km = ~40mpg

Cost per gallon, cost per liter...

When travelling in Canada, I also want to know what I'm paying for Canadian gas in $US per US gallon.

Checking the online Megaconverter, I found a conversion factor of 3.78541 liters/US Gallon, or 3.8 for practical purposes. Lately the $CDN/$US has been around 66¢, or 2/3 for easy calculations. (63.4¢ on 7/29/02)

$CDN/liter x 3.8 = $CDN/US gallon
$CDN/US gallon x 0.66 = $US/US gallon

Or, if you multiply the factors, 3.8 x 0.66, you get a total factor of approximately 2.5.

So, just multiply Canadian price per liter times 2.5 to get $US per US gallon!

For Canadian visitors to the US:

$US/gallon divided by 3.8 = $US per liter
$US per liter divided by 0.66 = $CDN per liter.

Combining the factors gives a total factor of approximately 0.4. So, just multiply US price per gallon times 0.4 to get $CDN per liter!

(I could have just shown that 1/2.5 = 0.4, but I thought it was clearer to show the numbers)
