main jet DISASTER!

AAAGGGH! Disassembling my carbs, all is going well, and I'm removing the LAST main jet, and for some reason, I can't seem to find the notch with my screwdriver.....

I grab my mini-maglite, and look into the hole.... lo and behold, there IS no notch left on the bugger! Some idiot had TOTALLY bolloxed it up, and I can't for the life of me seem to get this bastard out of the carb! Tried drilling the hole a little bigger then tapping in an allen wrench - no good. tried drilling w/bigger bit, then SLOWLY reversing the drill - no good.

Any help here would be INCREDIBLY appreciated.

Update.

Got the jet out. Drilled down on either side of original hole to make a deep trough for a flathead to force the bugger out. Sadly, I think I've done irreperable harm to the inside of the hole where the jet screws into (nicked it with the drill), and now the threads (at least, the top portion of the threads on one side) are mostly gone. I donno, I think it may still be possible to get a good seal with a new jet, but I reall don't know. How important is it to have a perfect seal on the threads of the top of the jet? Isn't it more important to have a seal on the BOTTOM of the jet?

I'll post in a minute with pictures.

Do you mean the PILOT jet? What hole are you looking into to find this jet?

If it is the PILOT jet, you can try a reverse drill bit, rotates counterclockwise to cut and it may help get it out.

Don't go too deep with the drill because there is a seat down in that hole that the PILOT jet rests on and if you booger that up, wel I think 'new carb'? The entire jet is only 1/2 inch long!

And be prepared with a 6mm tap to clean up the threads after you're done.

Oh, one more thing -- don't buy K&L pilot jets, they don't work!

Looks like I was a bit late in posting!. Too bad about the threads, but you should be able to clean things up with a tap. Go slow and lube it up good and clean all the chips out after.

The damage to the top of the threads - doesn't seem to be as bad as I originally thought - the seat is still undamaged, I think.

Where on EARTH am I gonna find new jets that WORK?

Should I just go balls out and buy a whole carb rebuild kit? my seals and gaskets look pretty shot too.

You'll need FOUR carb rebuild kits, just don't by K&L. Do a search here for carb kits and I'm sure You'll find suggestions. When I did mine, I got K&L and everything except the pilot jets were OK. Found out later that the pilots were NG and wound up re-installing my originals with good results.

Well Randy, Turns out that my local Yamaha dealer carries Mikuni jets that'll work just fine on my carbs! Good thing I also found carb rebuild kits that contain JUST the gaskets and seals - I should be in business as soon as I track down a 6mm tap.

Now, when you go to the shop, be sure he understands that you need Type BS30/96 #42.5

Wouldn't hurt to bring the old one with you for comparison.
