Re: running poor with higher Octane

Lower octane gas burns better (ignites faster, easier) than high octane. Thats all the octane ratings are about is how easily it lights off. Engines with high compression will ping on low octanes because they are not designed for it.
The idea that low vs high octane fuels are better, or that you are being "good" to your engine by using higher octane fuel than your engine requires is a falicy. Not to mention a waste of money!

After reading all of these replies, most of which were over my head, I too was interested in what gas other people used. I ping at 87 regardless of brand but at 89 on up I don't.Can't tell ya why.If I remember right I think my owners manuel said to use 91 octane. But since I am not leaving other bikes in my fumes 87 or 89 works for me and my bike.

Yup... run some SeaFoam through it to clean things up if it pings.

Whenever my mom rides it she brings it back dirty and without gas.

I normally fill it with premium, but I don't know why... I just always have. Maybe I should expand my horizons
