  • Intake Manifold/Boots

    Is $140 a decent price for the 4 rubber intake boots on a '79 special? Mine are pretty cracked up & I know they leak. The bike runs like crap at first, but gets better as it warms up, but that takes about 10-15 minutes at the middle choke. There's a local shop near me that has some. Just wondering, thanks.

    After examining a few of the boot threads here I ordered a set from partsnmore.com. They were $90 with free shipping but, since they ship from Canada, the ship time is usually several weeks to Montana.

    I've commonly seen several sets on ebay for ~100 which are probably the same (aftermarket) carb holders.

    I considered the rtv coating fix found elsewhere on this site but decided to go with new. Perhaps I'll coat the old ones and keep them for future use.

      i bought all four new in yamaha wrapper from MR Motorcycle for less than 30 bucks a piece..my bike is 79 standard #'s are 2H7-13586-00-00 for left...and 2H7-13596-00-00 for the rightside when you go to there sight and get price they come up at 31.99 apiece,,but when order is processed it knocks off some more(internet discount).. everything I have needed I first try to get genuine YAMA...nothing fits like OEM. Stevo

        I bought brand new carb boots in 2001. By 2003 they were cracked and looked just as bad as the originals. Granted the originals (1 of them) did leak.
        Cracked dosen't mean they are bad. If they don't leak then coat them if you want them pretty. Some have used PlastiDip, commonly used for tool handles.

          The poor running condition you describe is not caused by cracked manifold boots. Dirty/unsynchronized carbs will cause that kind of poor performance. The manifold boots are very thick and ususlly don't crack all the way through. Test them by spraying a bit of WD40 around them while the engine is running. If the engine speed does not pick up, then the cracks were not actually leaking. If they were leaking, you could try coating the boots with RTV silicone or spray them with PlastiDip.
