The Battle Cruiser seems consistent, 60 or 80 MPH, I can rely on the Walk light at 104 miles. Works out to right around 32 MPG. Best I ever did was 34, had the wind at my back.

Well, i have a standard with the Vetter, gets about 35mpg. My Special gets in the low 40s, but I have spend some time on that engine and it is my around town bike, lower speeds, lower rpms.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

Hey ther Pain!..............Think my mileage came up from 37 today.........serious, Made a bad downshift from third down to first at stop sign.......felt kinda funny anyway, must of kinda made the shift-shaft jump a little sideways, breaking off one of the ears on the washer that hold the pins in shift pawl shaft, causing a pin to come out................yeppers, left me in nuetral and pushed it to house 1.2 miles............damn, third time'a charm, right..............guess I'm gonna have to break down and drop the shaft assembly out and give second the dremal fix. Been puttin' it off since last fall, ridin' all winter.......guess a fix is better than havin' to carry an allen wrench, 10mm wrench, 8mmwrench, and an extra washer and a couple extra pins in case they end up in pan. That 680 pound sled sucks to push any distance!

Just figured the mileage from my westside version of the "Tax Relief Ride" on my MNS.
          35.86 MPG
I wasn't riding "all -out" but I wasn't taking it easy either (XScept the downhill in the rain section).

My Special is bone stock with a National Cycle Deflector Shield. I got about 34 mpg on the Los Baños lunch ride, 85-90 mph down I-5. Normally I get 38-42 mpg. Fuel light first lights at about 125 miles. Bike goes on reserve at about 135 miles.

Old fat guy on a naked XS11SG hauling a sidecar. 27mpg.
At a rally one time, #4 cylinder quit, max speed dropped to 55mph and fuel consumption went to 17mpg.
Took the pig home on a trailer and spent a week troubleshooting the iggy then found ***king #4 carb was blocked up.

The new owner will find out, but the Mangler with windshield and Vetter and indy filters and 4-1 and up 3 jets always got 40+ mpg, even with Sally on the back. Coming back from Bean Blossom last year I think I went close to 200 - 180 maybe? on a tank. That was riding with sixtysix and Dena on the 4 lane with Sally aboard.

Throughout my ownership I usually filled at 100 to 120, never put more than 2.5 to 3 gallons in. I do recall once or twice in 10 years getting a 37 or 38, but regularly it was 39.8 - 42 mpg. 'course I never drove fast on it...

                  Marty Marty Marty....

                  Having an XS/XJ and saying

'course I never drove fast on it...
Would kinda be like having Eva Longoria for a wife and saying.. "'course we never fooled around... "

Did you say that with a straight face?? Or are you afraid of the new owner finding out the story you told him was a load of BS... "Only to church on warm sunny Sundays" lol. You honestly never had to oblige the need to just rip the throttle back every now and then.... Just cause ya could?? Just sitting here shaking my head.... No wonder ya sold it... ya never had any FUN on it! Glad to see you are still around. How long can you retain "Guru" status with no XS throne to sit upon??

I would not describe my driving as 'fast;' perhaps purposeful,
                    or sprightly,
                    or exhuberant,
                    pleasantly rapid,
                    expeditiously swift,
                    carrying the mail,
                    pronto,
                    posthaste,
get the F**K outta the way granny,
don't embarass yourself by trying to keep up.

                    Something like that.

                    But not "fast."

Looks like most of us are getting under 35 mpg which is pretty abysmal for a bike but a lot better than most cages. I'm willing to bet most of us ride pretty fast and wind resistance alone is ruinous to fuel economy on an aerodynamically dirty vehicle such as a motorcycle. When I obey the speed limits, I get around 40 to 42 mpg. Mostly I don't and get 38-40. Any time on the Interstate and it drops down to the lower 30s. Those Harley guys get such great gas mileage because they just ride slower than we do. My friend Jim gets worse mileage than I do on his 95" Harley but he rides really fast, faster'n me. His bike is also reputed to be the fastest Harley in the county.

I'm just happy to be able to vote (since my last tank was 32 mpg)!!! Was starting to think I would have to cut the top off my Saturn, put some lake pipes on it, and remove two wheels just so I could afford to go cruising around.

Hey all.................all jokin aside(and that was no joke havin' to push that thing over a mile) after pulling carb assembly and setting floats(triple checked my settings this time) with 105mains, stock 185air jet, stock 42.5pilots, idle mix out 3 1/2 turns, stock air box with a Uni-Filter, a perfectly steady idle at 1100rpm, slight black around plug thread base, white porclein, carbs sync'ed who knows when, rode this morning some 50 moles south on rolling hills four-lane @70mph, back same road @63-65mph, refilled at same $2.76 station and pump. Just from setting all floats identical at 24mm(1mm lower than sea level setting), smooth at any rpm, even 2,000rpm 5th gear roll-on and not so much as a pop out of exhaust at idle or de-cell, got a 39.8 from previous 34mpg. With checking carb sync and fine tuning idle mixture, may be able to get the 43mpg that it got when new. Figure that's fairly good for a factory dresser that's not as good as it once was, but likely as good once as it ever was...............Brant.
