25, maybe--two up, naked special
carbs are getting put back together as soon as I get off here. #2 carb boot was really loose. Hopefully, with the clean of carbs and tightening of boots, the mpg will get in the upper 30's

MPG

80 SG, Pacifico, hard bags, hard trunk. Town, 30, keeping up with Maximan on highway, 30-33. K&N, Sportster muffs, no crossover, otherwise stock. The King of Kong likes 91 octane, a dash of Sea Foam and a shot of Lucas fuel treatment. More power, not necessarily more mpg. Fuel light @ 95-100 unless there's a head wind.

Fairing with tall (winter) shield, box, and a quick trip up and down about 1,300', 38 MPG. I do try to hit at least 85mph once each way to and from work.

Ray - That is exceptional. What in the heck is your trick?

I think Dan Hodges told me once he gets about 40 on his nude 81 special. But the guy has done 3 or 4 grand to the engine (ported head, over bore, web cams, header, etc). Plus it's NUDE...no steenkin windscreen to drag.

Tod - The guy on the Harley may be getting 50 mpg...but just remember...he still has to ride a HARDLY WORTHITSON!

There's only one way I could ride one of those things....with a ski mask...so no one would recognize me.

Just keep the ski mask on when you go into the gas station. You might get some free gas AND some money handed to you! I just suggest you don't try to get top fuel mileage as you leave! lol.

Last time I checked, my Maxim got 45mpg naked.

It was on a long (for Hawaii) trip to the other side of the island. I went up over the volcano starting at about 300' elevation, up to 6,800' elvation and back down again on the other side, all in about 70 miles. It was rainy through the first half, and then I hit fog you could cut with a knife. It finally warmed up again as I got below the inversion layer. I think my leather jacket must have weighed about 30 lbs at one point with all the rain it soaked up. I decided I wasn't going to take the same way back home, so instead I drove the long way north around the island where I was less likely to hit rain. By the time I got back home, my jacket had dried out completely and I was in a great mood. It was the first real test I had put my bike through after reassembling her from the pieces I was sent.

I don't think that coasting down the mountain had any appreciable influence on my mileage. I was running in 2nd or 3rd for most of the way down, trying to keep my speed down a bit in the twisties where I couldn't see who or what might be on my side of the road ahead. Average speed for the first half of the ride was probably around 40mph. The ride home averaged more like 60mph.

I'll have to get the intake rubbers fixed and check her again!

... I still need to adjust the Pilot Circuit for proper low-RPM operation.
Man, she's a real RUNNER! I think I need at least one more gear!

She's fitted with the Vetter Fairing and Trunk and is totally stock.

But your question is "funny". As a matter of fact one time I was on a ride with somebuddies in the mountains. We had packed our lunches for a roadside picinic and the twisties were treacherous.

Right before we proceeded into the "belly of the snake" one of my compadres looked at me and said "If you die today.......... can I have your lunch?"

My XJ with the smaller black fairing got about 33 on the tank before last. I sped everywhere and didn't shift early. Obeying the signage and shifting early it got 37 over the last tank. Stock jetting and exhaust.

naked '79, mac 4-2, 2 sizes down on mains, needles lowered one notch. on hywy, with small bar mounted w/s, luggage, my 215lbs, still get 40 mpg up to about 75 mph. more when cruising w/o luggage or shield.

i don't often push the limits of my tank capacity, but i did once when i was in mexico last month. 165 miles, still not on reserve, rolling into a gas station. cheers

The early XS1100's all have two thjings going fore them.
1. They go FASTmilage
2. They will go a LONG way if driven at a reasonable speed.
The best I was able to do in '78 on my old bike was 53 MPG, and I got 45 almost all the time. I was 24 at the time, and I didn't ride easy!!
The newer bike, with the smog, etc. don't do as well. You can get a set of older carbs, jet and tune it properly, and you may be able to get an extra 15 or 20 miles per tank.
