Don’t know where to ask my questions so if you can help me or point me to the right place that would be great! I have a 1979 xs1100s and it wanted to change the oil for the first time. Well I could not find the drain plug so I drain through the filter. Well that didn’t work so I drained what I thought was the drain plug but not enough oil came out and it smelled different. After reading the oil section I think it was gear oil. So no I need to know how to put more gear oil in and were is that drain plug. Your help will get me on the road sooner! Hope to hear from you soon.

First things first. Get yourself a service manual.

The engine oil drain plug is located just behind the filter housing. Look behind the filter from the front of the engine and you'll see the bolt. It's 17 or 18mm.

The Middle gear fill plug is an allen plug located just under the air filter box on the shifter side of the engine. it may have a black plastic cap on it (to keep dirt out and to hide it from you ) It's probably really tight, so be careful loosening it. Use 80/90 hypoid gear oil, capacity is .38 US qts OR .36 liters.

You might as well do the final gear also, same hypoid oil, capacity .32 US qts OR .30 liters.

          whats the final gear?

That's the big round thing at center of the rear wheel. I'ts got a drain plug at the bottom and a fill plug about midway up. PS don't try to remove the cap at the top - it's an air vent.
