  • Special vs. Standard tank

I'm sure this has been asked before. Will a Standard tank fit a Special? I've heard it will but am not sure.

    Thanks

Yes the Standard Tank (5.+ gallon) will fit on the Specials. The fuel petcocks are not interchangeable and the diaphragm ass'y (octopus) is not used because the Standard fuel petcocks have the diaphragms in them. Also if you have a 78,79 Standard Pacifico fairing the bottom of the tank will hit against the back two bolts that hold the fairing to the frame mount. The front forks might also touch the front of the fuel tank when the steering is fully turned left or right but it should not dent or crease the tank. I know this because I have a 1979 XS1100SF and have the 78 Standard fuel tank and Pacifico fairing with lowers on my bike. The 81 tank (Venture, 6.+ gallon) not sure of its fit. I had a 6 gallon tank (from a wrecked bike had dents from the forks hitting the tank in the accendent) years ago on my bike but at that time I had H-bar rizers and and no fairing.

    Hope this helps.
