  • Oil pressure light / blowing "Signal" fuse

    I'm haveing a bit of an issue with my XS as of lately. The Tachometer stopped working a short while back along with the signals. I quickly realized it was probably just a blown fuse. After replacing the "signal" fuse the tach and signals worked for a short time but then the fues blew again. I also noticed that I had a lack of oil pressure (oil pressure light stayed on) after replacing the fuse a second time. (Note: I only had a 15 amp fuse to replace the blown 20 amp fuse)

    The lack of oil pressure I have seen a couple months ago too. I unhooked the oil pressure switch / Tried to test it as per the repair manual (kind of confusing). I eneded up cracking the oil line and bumped the starter to see if there was actual flow and boy was there. I was surprised how much oil got pumped out of that thing in a couple revolutions. None the less after I tightened the oil fitting the oil pressure light problem went away.

    I havent had the chance to do much trouble shooting yet this time but was wondering if anybody else has had a simular problem. Is the "Signal" fuse blowing a because of a faulty oil pressure guage? Is it common that the tach / signals / or other accesories hooked to the "Signal" circuit blows this fuse? Has anybody else had an eronious oil pressure light come on?

    Take a look at the "tech tips", under electrical. You may need to change the main fuse block, as they do wear and then fail. You WILL need to run the original amp fuses, or you will be blowing them. Just don't put in a 25 or 30 instead of the 20, as you could then melt wires.

      Hey Mudbuddy,

      There's a lot of power/amperage being drawn thru the turn signal circuit, due partially to the THERMAL flasher unit. You'll want to check all of your bulb sockets, and grounds for the signal lamps for corrosion, along with the other connectors, including the flasher. To help folks save about 1/2 the cost, I buy the fuse holders in volume and then sell/ship them to folks for a mere $7.00, you can see it in the tech tips!

      You might also want to change to an electronic or electro/mechanical flasher unit to cut down on current draw, and will work for LED's if you decide to make that switch!

      Also, check the signal wires, could have a wire that has rubbed raw and grounding against the frame, shorting it out and blowing the fuse!? In the headlight bucket, and under the seat around fender is common place! Same thing can happen to the oil pressure light. The pressure sensor can get gummed up and not break the ground under oil pressure keeping the light on. But could just be a bad sensor.

        Thanks for the info.

        I have checked out some of the wiring posts and have also checked out the fuse blocks you have been ordering / delivering. Yup, I think I'll be sending you 7 bucks to get this knocked out.

        Again, I havent done much to look at the bike yet but I am very curious as to what is causing the fuse to be blowing. So thanks much for the quick tips and I'll post up to let ya'll know what I found.
