Hi all, new member here, just bought an 82 Maxim 1100 with a couple of corrosion stuck valves and needing some brake work.

Does anyone know if the valve guides are still available from Yamaha? I broke one getting one of the valves out. Damn, I could have reamed that one out too.

Yamaha's Microfiche site is currently down, so can't check it for you. IF you go to the LINKS section, you'll find links to many sources for parts and such! However I would think they still are, a guy got guides for his XS11 last year, and it's older than the XJ!

Do a search for valve guides and you'll find some good info and tips on replacing them, although it looks like you might already know how from the looks of things in your photos! Looks like a fair amount of rust on top of a piston, and possibly the cylinder walls?

We do know that OEM or standard oversize replacement pistons and rings are NOT available. However, you can get a WISECO big bore kit, in 2 flavors 1179 or 1196cc.

Can't see how many miles are on the clock from your photo, too much glare. Cam Chains are also available, and you can replace it WITHOUT having to split the cases! Same with the big bore, if it's low mileage most likely the bottom end is still in good condition and may just need the jugs bored, and new pistons put in!

Got on my 'other' computer, looked up the #'s in my FICHE file,
1j7-11133-10-00 Intake
1j7-11134-10-00 Exhaust

IT states they are the 1st O/S .....assuming that means oversize, guess it means you might have to have it drilled/reamed to get it to fit!?

They are still available, as a search on Cycle-parts.com revealed, about $15.00, ea, but that site requires a $100.00 minimum order, Bike Bandit didn't list them? You may try Zanottis, or even your local dealer, but you'll probably pay a bit more!?

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply(s)! I do have a local dealer, but anxiety made me ask rather than wait till Tuesday for them to open again. I prefer to spend just a bit more to get my stuff locally if possible. I like it when they don't rape me when I come in with the Beemer wheels and tiresfor a set of off bike tire swaps.

I've got a mill, press and a full set of guide reamers. I should be able to handle the head work. ;-)

I'll put up lots more pics as I get things moving forward. Back to the bench to play with the brake master cylinders some more.

I saw from searching around that the valves and such were available, but I never came across any guide info.

It's alive

I got the beast running, I found a good used head that was cheaper than rebuilding the original.

I still have a few bugs to work out, but shouldn't be a big deal. Most of the problems relate to a fuel leak at the spider. I'll swap out those hoses and I should be good to go.

Took it for a ride up and down the dirt road driveay, runs good but still need to get the front master cylinder kit installed before I can really ride it.

Now on to sidecar building and waiting for parts.
