  • First Ride Oddities

Had my first extended ride today (Dayton to Indy and back). Lost the headlight on the way back. Turns out the fuse block where the Headlight fuse is melted. Is this common? PO installed a Blue Halogen headlamp. I can't remember what he said it was rated at, but it is intense. Anyhoo, I stopped at Advance Auto and bought an inline fuse holder, commandeered a ball point pen to ensure good contact but putting the spring in the fuse holder against the fuse and Light is back. It looks as if the rest of the stock fuse holder is about toast too.

One other thing, I started it up after fueling in Neutral and had an awful rattle in the tranny. Pull in the clutch, drop it in first, rattle goes away. Back to neutral, rattle. Back to first, no rattle. Back to neutral, rattle. Starting to get conerned, standing still, I pushed it up to 2nd and then back to neutral. No rattle. Anything to be concerned about or just had some gears that were slightly misaligned on the shaft when I started it up?

.. Gino, ask TC about one of his replacement fuse boxes, i have one, it's a very nice part! what happend is over time the fuses get loose or corotion in the holder and causes it to start arcing. this is a common problem for all old bikes.

.. unless the rattling in your trans happens alot, i would not worry about it.

hope the wifey's feeling better soon

He already sent me a PM on it. I'll be sending him a payment this evening. The rattling was a first time event. It certainly had me going "uh oh" for a few minutes, especially since I was almost a hundred miles from home! (Had father in law staying with swmbo for a few hours)

With my 1st tranny.... no rattling, whizzing or anything from anywhere.
On my 2nd tranny (the 1st lost the 3rd gear... a few teeth went), there is the same neutral rattling you describe... but not always, didnt go into the details.
While coasting/braking with the engine, the tranny or some component of the final drive (sounds in front) is whining. (but everyone here said dont worry bout it, but I still dont like it).
Also the 5th is skipping a bit... or feels like skipping. Did that on the 1st tranny too, but it looked OK when I visually inspected both trannys. I don't like it and I hate to pull the engine for a transmission job again, but it looks like I have no choice. So any ideas are welcome.
When I changed the trannys, I changed both axles with all the cogs, shift drum, shift forks,....

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
