  • 82 maxim exhaust, what do they fit?

does anyone knows if the engine to frame relationship and the frame itself is the same as a79-81 standard.

i real question is will an exhaust system 4 to 1 from a maxim fit a 79 standard xs1100f?

They will not fit on a Standard. The XJ pipes are the same head pipe, but the mufflers are angled upwards towards the rear, and a Standard's mufflers are parallel to the ground. The XJ muflers will probably hit the passenger footpeg bracket/ mufler mount, and those cannot be swapped out with a set from a Special. I already tried that. I tried to mount some Standard footpeg brackets on a Special, and I found the distance from the opening in the bracket for the rear brake pivot to the hole that accepts the rear engine mount bolt is off by about 1/2 inch, so I assume that the Special bracket will not fit a Standard, but I could be wrong...It's happened before and will happen again, more often than I would like.

.. pretty much every thing John has said is true, but they made the some 4/1's to fit all of the XS/XJ 1100's. it would depend on what brand 4/1 exhaust system you are looking to buy.. chances are good that if it's a Mac than it will fit.

        I guess

I should have read the question twice. I didn't take into account that he said it was a 4-1 system. Like GNEPIG said, if it a mac, ten most likely it will fit. Most Macs 'I've seen are pretty much parallel to the ground, and not upswept.

Depends on what is used for the rear muffler bracket. The XJ, which uses the rear footpeg bracket to hang the stock pipes, is different than either the Special or Standard units. Muffler bracket is farther forward, about 1.25 inches if memory serves me. If you put the XJ units on another bike you will probably have to build or modify the muffler mount. There is a small possibility the mufler to header length may have to be increased (effectively moving the muffler back) to use the stock bracket on the Standard, but there is usually quite a bit of leway as to how far the mufler has to be inserted into the collector, shouldn't be a problem but could be depending on the muffler used and circumstances. (The muffler pipe may have been shortened to fit the XJ in the initial install, for example.) In any case, it is not a bolt-up swap but shouldn't pose any major problems if you are willing to tinker a bit.
