  • New Clutch Rebuild Tech Tip!

    Hey there folks,

Just wanted to pass on this info, after recently needing to rebuild my clutches, putting in new plates, springs, and adding an extra steel plate, I took a bunch of photos, and made a little Visual Walkthru Tech Tip about this process, it's in the repairs section, just follow this link if you want to see it!

          Perfect timing!
I will be changing my clutch plates out soon (getting them from Andreas).
It is adjusted now so that I don't get the slipping when I accelerate, but now the gears grind and clunk when I shift. I was looking at the Clymers and wondering how much it would cost for a shop to it! Thanks, the step by step instructions you have provided should make it easy enough for even me to do!
          Thanks!

            sandwich?

Here's the clutch pack with all of the plates back in it starting with a friction plate on the bottom, and then alternating steel and friction, but when you get to the 4th steel, then stack the EXTRA STEEL plate next to it, then continue the friction/steel sandwich!
.. it must have been about lunch time when he got to this part.
            good job Curtis

What is the advantage of the "extra" steel plate? Is it for making up for springs that are too short.... or worn plates..... or.....?

.. after so many miles and so much abuse(because these bikes are so fast, they are fun to abuse), the clutch basket gets worn also. the extra steel helps the springs, the worn friction plates and the clutch basket ,to a point.. also a motor oil that works WITH your friction plates is a plus

                  Great tech tip

Another perfect timing, got my new clutch pack and springs in today. Broke it all down tonight in about an hour, and hopefully back in tomorrow night after the only Saturday of the year I have to work doing inventory.
The only catch I had was actually removing the cover. I beat on it with a rawhide mallet to get it started but no joy in getting it off. Took the two screws from the round cover and threaded in about halfway and with a little gental pulling with a claw hammer (don't laugh) it came right off.
There's always a way, figure it out.

                      Wow again

I forgot to post all back together in 3 hours & working perfect. So about 5 hours end to end with dinner included in the time. I was going slow and methodical, meaning once is enough for anybody.

                        Tanks TC

Added steel to clutch today. Major improvement. All friction's were just w/in spec but had slip when hard in third. Went out to night and was a menace
