Drain your oil and look for material in it.

          "Oils well that ends well"

Here's a thought I mentioned a month ago. Had a bike in the shop that sounded like it was flyin' apart. Drained the oil looking fer chucks(saw none). Refilled it with good ol' 10w40. Within minutes... you could hardly hear it running.
Question: after you fixed the 'earl pump', did you fill the bike with that evil synthetic crap?

I don't think you want the kind of freebies he was offering anyway.

Thanks everyone!! Well heres what I have so far. I pulled the valve cover and tried to adjust the cam chain (didn't work). I pulled the tensioner and it was stuck so I freed it up anad it did something. It queted the valves However The knock is still there. I did check the valve clearance while inside and all checked out. I put it back together and pulled out the stethescope and I think the noise is the loudest on the # 4 exhaust valve area right under the cam. The noise in noticable at the bottom of the jug but not as much as below the cam on the exhaust side. What do you think? I think I checked almost everything else that was mentioned. Thanks Promethius. I am actually in Port Orchard so I'm not too far away after all. In fact I think I know right where your at.. What time in the morn are you there? I'm going to try one other test and that is to disconnect the plug wire from that cylinder and see if the noise changes. How difficult is it to change a rod or whatever else in conjuction if it is a rod. I wonder if it was affected when the oil pump went out (while on test ride). When the oil pump went out, it was because the keeper on the fork shaft slipped off and the shaft slid out into the clutch basket busting the little gear and cracking the oil pump into three pieces. I was on a large downhill slope when the bike just started to decellerate so the motor was running for a bit while I was trying to figure out what was going on. Anyway, I would like to come in for a visit and some good advice.

                        Hey Pro,

Sounds like when you get tired of the hourly grind, You could get an old camoflauged jacket and sit your "Homeless" butt on a ramp and do well! You wouldn't even have to take a shower before work then!
I have seen a guy in Oklahoma City with a sign that said.. "Why lie? Need money for beer." I thought it was original anyway... lol.

                          "The Doctor makes house calls"

                          Sad news, indeed.
I shouldn't comment on another man's troubles, but the diagnostic technique is worth passing along.
Yes, the engine was a'knockin'. Comin' from the #4 cylinder area. Sounded high, but also sounded from the lower nether regions. I suspected crank... and seeing how the crank is somewhat isolated from the engine case, any vibration noise from it could be transferred up the connecting rod to the piston, and transferred to the cylinder wall, making it hard to pinpoint it's origin.
Engine running... pulled the spark plug cap from #4. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK instantly quieted to knock, knock, knock. When putting the cap back on, as soon as it got it's first spark and fired the cylinder... CLUNK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.
Sounds like connecting rod bearing to me.
(He paid my usual fee for a house call... He had coffee at the ready and his Haus Frau had baked chocolate chip cookies!)
Anyone have any further advice before he tears into it?

                            limp wrist???

                            Hey prom,
These do have a wrist pin don't they?

Don't have manual at home, but aren't the bearings in the lower case? Would think it would thump pretty good down there. Wrist pin can sound up or down.

What a thread: freebies, up and down, large B....., and house calls with chocolate chip cookies!

Some guys just get all the breaks

Thanks again to Prom for the help with diagnosis. Looks like I have my work cut out for me. I've decided to pull the engine and flip it over and crack the lower half of the case. It'll be a week or two before I get to it but for the benefit of the forum I'll keep an update and maybe take pic's along the way. Following the book it doesn't look too difficult. Thanks again for everyones input, It all adds to the knowledge.
