  • Smokein when hot.....

This problem has been around for a while but hasn't been a big deal, yet. Bike runs great but the smokein is starting to bug me. When the motor gets hot, (prolonged slow speed in traffic) the right side will start belching blue smoke. Goes away after it cools down a little and does not do it all the time. Did compression check with cold engine, 125-128 on all four, no change with oil squirted into cylinders. After a ride saturday, it started to smoke as I pulled into the garage, grabbed the compression tester and did the test with the motor hot (no more fingerprints for me!!!), got the same results. #4 cylinder seems to be the offender, had new plugs in it and #4 showed oil fouling. Put everything back together and took 'er for a ride, no smoke. At 65k on the clock, I am suspecting valve guides and seals are going south Oil level is correct and there is no fuel contamination. Time for a valve job?

valve guides in my experience either leak, or do not.

Engine over heating, oil can break down. Easier to slip past rings.

"Honey... let's go shopping for rings."

(Words that every 'single man' dreads to hear. Not too pleasant for the owner of a bike with 65k, either)
All things being equal, I agree with MRO.
Of course, old, brittle valve seals can act loopy when hot, but seeing your compression numbers (142 being the standard) the ol' girl might be a little tired.

I still have a 81 h xs1100 engine (lower) transmission still assembled, crank with connecting rods and pistons. The lower engine assembled. weighes 125 ibs has approx 20,000 miles, Use your own alt, sidecovers, pickup coils, jugs, head, starter, middle gear clutch, $125.00 UPS quoted me approx $90 to ship to michigan might even be cheaper to your local. andreas cheaper than the big bore kit.

I think if you used STP in a XS11 you would be SOL cause it would soon be DOA which would make you PO'ed cause its not the right MO to fix it.
