Regulator/rectifier

Pulled my spare regulator out of my "box-o-parts" to see if it is any good (gonna help another member check his charging system), anyway, both my manuals show 3 wires coming out of the smal plug, brown, green, black. I only have the brown and green. Is it safe to assume the black was a ground and now the unit is grounded when its installed so the black is no longer needed? I checked the one on my bike and it is the same deal. Want to make sure before I start probeing around, hate it when I let the smoke out of electrical devices.

Yes, your assumption is correct. The black would be a ground, on some (my 79F), the black was omitted and the reg/rec case is grounded to the wiring harness at one of the mounting bolts.

Thanks man, i kinda figured that. The regulator came off a 79 and looks to be the same as the one on my 80. Now I can proceed with my smoke test.
