Actually, currently the only way I can get it to start is by throttling it. :P

And it takes a while too. Poor starter is bound to give out soon.

Just out a curiosity, have you done a compression test???

If you got spark, good compression, timing close, then your back to fuel

Course there's always the unlikely weird $hit like a restriction/blockage in the exhaust

I haven't done a compression test recently. But the last test put all the cylinders at about 135-145 range. That was 6 months ago.

And it was MUCH better than the compression it had when I first got it, with two cylinders in the 120 range. But the rings have reseated, I think.

I don't see any reason why it would be any different all of a sudden. It's always had a hard time starting, so who knows.

Any particular two? Or just any two.

A week ago when I was trying to get it started, pipes for 1&3 were warm and the pipes for 2&4 were cold. Which I thought to be odd.

Also, I'm fairly certain that my continuous removal of the carburetors might have been the final straw for the intake boots.

.. well, sparkosis is easy to check. pull out all of your sparkplugs, then plug them into the plug wires and lay them on the head[you want them to ground to the head]. turn the key on and push the starter button, look at the condition of your spark for each plug, it should be a nice dark blue for all 4. if this is so then you dont have that problem
.. it sounds to me by the way you have described the way your bike idles and starts, you have intake leaks.. to check this, start the motor and spray some brake cleaner or carb cleaner around the intake manifolds, if they leak the sound of the motor will change. it will either rev up or want to die
.. good luck on your mission
