Right Side Mirror

Hi guys, I couldn't find in my search where this might have been covered before so I'm beginning to think this may be specific to my bike only. You know, like an abberation or something.

As you can clearly see in the first photo my right side mirror sits on a higher plane than the left one.


Here is a pic of the left side mirror mount. The mirror holder comes out of the bracket at 90 degrees.


The right side comes out at an angle upwards.


Have any of you guys with LH's had this problem and if so what did you do about it. My bike came from the factory like this but I'm thinking it must have been a mistake. If any of you know which part I can replace to make them both the same I would appreciate it.

ARE YOU SURE? Have you owned it since it came off the showroom floor?? Reason I ask is that your front MC is NOT OEM style. It's a solid design chamber with rear glass view window. The OEM MC's all had that vinyl reservoir chamber. And I just looked at my 79SF, and the mirror mount comes straight out at 90 degrees. I've got a "different" used MC on my 81SH I got from a salvage shop, says YAMAHA across the top reservoir cap, is a solid chamber with glass viewer, but the mirror mount comes out 90 degrees also. The one you have is from some other model, but definitely NOT OEM XS11!!

So...you can opt for a replacement aftermarket front MC from PNM, MikesXS, etc, and get your 90 degree mount that way! Or, you can live with it and save some $$!?

You might try rotating the clutch perch, and/or the master cylinder until you have the desired angle on the mirror stems.

I'm sure the bike came this way, I drove it off the showroom floor myself. In fact, here is a scan from my original owners manual.

The curve of the handlebar doesn't allow for much rotation of the master cylinder, it fits very close to the bar. Also it would put the brake lever at an awkward angle. I suppose the only remedy is to buy a master clyinder from a standard. I'm just curious if other LH models are set up the same as mine.

Jake, John meant CLUTCH PERCH, left side. It is plain to see that this side (left), the mirror mount is at a different angle than the right side. Rotate the left side so that the mirror stem at the mount is at the same angle (vertical) as the right side. This will also put your clutch lever at the same angle that your brake lever now is. This is the correct M/C for the 81 LH model.

You learn something new everyday!! Didn't realize that Yamaha had used a different MC for the MNS? But I guess they were wanting to have a totally blacked out MC, and the other version with that big white reservoir chamber wouldn't fit the scheme! Leave it to Yamaha to bugger up their own design!

You stated about getting a MC for a Standard, I think you would want a Special to better fit the OEM buckhorns that you have, to help keep the angle of the reservoir closer to OEM!? However, the aftermarket MC's will work just fine even with the reservoir titled a bit, and you would get a NEW one, all shiny and black as well as have the correct reverse threading and 90 degree mounting angle for the mirror!

OT, do you ever get down to Tidewater area? Do you know about the XS East rally in W. Va.? Gonna be a big group there this year! I'll be riding Godzilla there, gas prices are getting so rediculous, want to get the most mileage I can, bike=30mpg, SUV=18 towing trailer !!

I'm sorry, I was fixated on right side and your suggestion went right by me. Thanks Rover, for pointing that out to me. I can improve on the mirror locations by doing as you say but that also puts the clutch lever at an odd angle.


I guess it's going to be a compromise in the end. I can't see buying a whole new m/c just to have perfectly even mirrors.

I spend a lot of time in Norfolk from Feb. thru April at Lyon Shipyard as well as Colonna's, supervising the off-season maintenance on our fish boats. Will one of the links on the left take me there? I'll check it out.

Remember, the 81 MNS had linked brakes, like the XJ, so the front M/C is only controlling one caliper. That M/C in the pic is probably the same as the XJ.

Hey Jake,

Yes, the Rallies, North America, then NorthEast, then XSEast! If you think you could make it, would be willing to wait for you on Friday, and then we could ride together. Another XSive in Richmond is going as well, but I'll be rendesvousing with him a few hours west on 58. Not sure what route would be quickest for you, have to research it!

John, thanks, it's probably very similar to the one I have! Mine was trying to drive 2 calipers, and with my 25 y/o oem vinyl lines, it was rather spongy, but after installing those SS lines, very nice feel to them, so I'm sure the few folks that want to split their lines and run the front pair with their OEM MC, that it would work just fine.....WITH SS Lines!

I wish I could make it man, but by that date I'll be up to my armpits in menhaden. Maybe in a couple more years.
