  • vacuum advance hose/ carb balance question.

    Hi all,
I havent posted for a while cause Ive been workin on the XS beasty I have...
and guess what.... ITS ALIVE!!!! She runs well and I am x-cited.....But I have a question.. After reading on this forum all the vacuum advance info I could Im still needin info. It appears that my hose from the advance unit is going to my #2 intake boot and not the carb. I have a 78 XS11. All the other posts refer to 79 and newer, did this placement change after 78??. Also what conditions would I be seeing from out of balance carbs??? Thanks again. You guys are great .I will post pics of my XS when I get them........D

All the XS bikes should have the vacum advance going to the carb, not the intake boot. You should have a metal "nipple" on the top of #2 carb, near the boot. That port is for the vacume advance ONLY.
If the carbs are out of sync, you could have an idle problem, missing while at speed, or a number of other problems. If you don't have a "carb stik" or other such tool, it is worth the price to get the carbs synced. You do want to adjust the valves, timing chain, and idle BEFORE adjusting the carbs.
